The present invention embraces printers such as hand-held printers and mobile/portable printer. One exemplary embodiment includes 'print as you glide' (PAYG) devices. Such printers may comprise a modular print engine that is removable from the printer and may allow a user to easily access and load the ribbon in the mobile print engine. The modular print engine may comprise a modular print head and an encoder that may determine the movement of the print head relative to a stationary media. When a printer is pressed against the media, the print head's burn line may be resting on the media. When the printer is stationary relative to the media, the encoder may not trigger the printing. Once PAYG is being slid or glided across the media, the encoder may start to rotate and then send a signal to a processor, causing the printer to start printing.

Method and apparatus for printing

Provided herein is a printing apparatus that includes a printhead assembly and a plurality of printhead pressure load modules that are adjustable on a shaft of a printhead pressure load assembly and engaged with a printhead member. The printhead pressure load module has a hollow housing, a plunger member, and a rotary cam. The plunger member and the rotary cam are movably engaged in the hollow housing. The rotary cam includes a plurality of channel members defined at an outer surface. Each channel member has a depth that is different from a depth of an adjacent channel member. A movement of the plunger member inwardly through the hollow housing defines a position of the rotary cam along the longitudinal axis with respect to the hollow housing. Position change of the rotary cam defines a force that acts on a pressure contact member and adjusts a load on the printhead assembly.

Printhead pressure adjustment for a printing apparatus

Embodiments of the present invention describe a spindle for use by rolled materials (for example, ribbon, and labels) in a thermal printing device. The spindle contains a rigid side designed to prevent the spindle from flexing during printing. The spindle also contains a flexible side designed to address tolerance issues with the core of the rolled material and to retain the relative movement of the core of the rolled material.

The present invention embraces a method and apparatus for providing feedback to a user on the status of media or ribbon of a printer. The feedback may be provided by incorporating a feedback mechanism in a hanger of a printer. The printer may be a thermal printer, but may be another type of printer. The feedback mechanism of the printer may be designed to work with one or more sensors to provide a feedback loop so that without an input from a user, the printer is able to detect the presence/absence of media or ribbon, as well as determine the width of the loaded media or ribbon. In another embodiment, the feedback mechanism is able to determine the weight of the roll of media or ribbon and hence determine the quantity of media or ribbon available on the hanger.

A bidirectional media supporting system includes a first and second rollers configured to rotate to feed media in forward and reverse feed modes; a first clutch bearing set, and a second clutch bearing set configured to engage with the first clutch bearing set; and a gear transmission assembly configured to transfer a driving force from the first roller to the second roller. A method for reversing direction of printing media includes advancing media while maintaining a rotational speed of a platen roller assembly above that of a feeding roller assembly; receiving a signal to reverse the direction of advancing media; and adjusting operation by reversing a direction of rotation of a transmission gear coupled to the feeding and platen roller assemblies, and by rotating the roller assemblies in an opposite direction, while maintaining the rotational speed of the platen roller assembly below that of the feeding roller assembly.

Printer spindle assembly is provided including media spindle having first end and second end, a commutator disposed circumferentially at first end, at least two brushes in electrical contact with commutator and connected to voltage source, a plurality of electrically conductive springs serially disposed on media spindle in electrical communication with commutator, and a continuous electrically conductive path formed of electrically resistive material disposed along longitudinal axis of media spindle and configured to be in electrical contact with first spring end of one or more electrically conductive springs in the compressed state to form series circuit. Voltage source, brushes, and commutator form closed electrical circuit. Each electrically conductive spring is configured to be in uncompressed state in absence of media on media spindle and one or more of electrically conductive springs is configured to be in compressed state in presence of media on media spindle.

Printers, printer spindle assemblies, and methods for determining media width for controlling media tension

A system for removably retaining a print head assembly includes a bracket holding a print head assembly and a shaft for receiving the bracket on the shaft. The shaft includes a retaining assembly, a first shaft section having a profile geometry to allow the bracket to be received onto the shaft, a second shaft section having a profile geometry preventing removal of the bracket from the shaft, and a positioning assembly configured to resiliently engage the bracket. When the bracket is received on the shaft at the first shaft section, the positioning assembly can engage and releasably reposition the bracket onto the second shaft section and against the retaining assembly.

Removably retaining a print head assembly on a printer

A self-strip media module in a printer is provided. The self-strip media module includes a peel bar having a length at least as great as the length of a platen roller and being rotatably engaged at the ends of the platen roller. The media includes a series of labels adhered to a liner. The media is fed over the peel bar and between the platen roller and a mid-chassis. The peel bar may be rotated towards the discharge side of the platen roller, pulling the media over the platen roller and over itself. A thermal print head is lowered onto the media over the platen roller and to print on the labels. The printer advances the media over the peel bar. The labels are stripped from the liner when the media advances around the peel bar.

Self-strip media module

A printer with a single motor system to match torques between ribbon supply and ribbon take-up is provided. The printer comprises a ribbon supply spindle, a take-up ribbon spindle, sensors to output ribbon width and diameter at ribbon supply, and a sensor which outputs ribbon diameter at ribbon take-up. The printer is provided with a drive system providing rotation to the ribbon supply via tension on the ribbon loaded on the ribbon supply spindle and taken-up on the take-up ribbon spindle. Firmware, communicatively linked to the sensors and the drive system, is configured to calculate ribbon tension at the ribbon supply spindle, to calculate the torque required on the ribbon on the ribbon take-up spindle to match the ribbon tension at the take-up spindle to the ribbon tension at the ribbon supply spindle, and to adjust the drive system to match these torques.

Single motor dynamic ribbon feedback system for a printer

A method and apparatus for printer compensation is disclosed. A label stop sensor (LSS) detects a time T(1) associated with an initial label position near the beginning of a print job. The label stop sensor detects a time T(L) associated with a label position that is L labels later in the print job. From at least the times T(1) and T(L) and a printer media feed rate a processor calculates a difference between the initial label position and the later label position. A start adjustment factor is compensated by the difference between the initial label position and the later label position to account for changes in print position between the first label and the later label.

Print precision improvement over long print jobs

A printer ribbon supply spindle assembly is provided. The ribbon spindle has multiple segments contiguous to each other. The spindle assembly includes a commutator disposed circumferentially on the first segment of the ribbon spindle and two carbon brushes connected to a voltage source and disposed generally in electrical contact with and on either side of the commutator. The voltage source, the carbon brushes, and the commutator complete an electrical circuit. C-shaped conductive springs are disposed over each of the multiple segments. The c-shaped conductive springs compress when covered by a printer ribbon and become in electrical contact with the commutator and adjacent compressed c-shaped springs, forming additional parallel circuits. An electronic element is disposed at the center of the c-shaped conductive springs. Measuring a change in the circuit due the additional parallel circuits with the electronic element indicates the printer ribbon width.
