A method for making a supported tantalum oxide catalyst precursor or catalyst with controlled Ta distribution and the resulting supported Ta catalyst. In an embodiment, the method comprises selecting a Ta-precursor with appropriate reactivity with the surface hydroxyls of the solid oxide support material to give a desired Ta distribution in the catalyst precursor or catalyst. In an embodiment the method comprises controlling the number of surface hydroxyls available on the support material to react with the Ta-precursor by thermal methods, such as calcination, to achieve the desired Ta distribution.

Method for manufacturing a supported tantalum catalyst

A composition, such as a catalyst precursor or a catalyst comprising a Cr coated silica support with particularly defined levels of Na and Al, such that the resulting Cr/Silica catalyst has an increased MI potential is disclosed. In an embodiment, the disclosed catalyst composition comprises a silica-containing substrate made using a base-set gel and comprising a catalytically active metal consisting of Cr, with Al impurities of less than 50 ppm and Na in an amount of less than 800 ppm of the catalyst composition. The disclosed composition has an increased MI potential over a catalyst having higher Al content, a lower Na:Al ratio, or both. Methods of making the disclosed composition, and methods of using it to prepare a polyethylene are also disclosed.

Chromium-on-silica catalysts and methods of making the same

A process for preparation of silica xerogel catalyst support particles having high surface areas involves ageing a silica hydrogel at a pH from 3 to 5 and at a temperature of 45&#xb0; C. or more. The ageing at low pH leads to a silica gel which may be converted to a xerogel having a pore volume of 1.5 cm/g or more and a surface area of 600 m/g or more by removal of liquid from the pore structure by solvent exchange with a liquid solvent having a surface tension of 35 mN/m or less. The resulting particles are useful for carrying catalyst metal compounds, such as a chromium compounds, in the pore structure to act as catalyst precursors. These catalyst precursors may be activated into porous catalyst particles suitable for use for olefin polymerization to provide high activity and for forming high molecular weight polymers (low MI polymers) with good crack resistance.

Compositions and methods are provided for treating wood products to provide leach-resistant protection against fungal decay, termites and other wood destroying organisms. The preservative compositions provided include ammonia-stabilized solutions of zinc and boron, preferably in a molar ratio of Zn:B of between about 0.4:1 and 5:1, and are essentially copper free. The preservative may be applied by vacuum and/or pressure treatment or dip treatment under atmospheric pressure.

Composition of, and process for preparing, silica xerogel for beer stabilization

Systems and methods are provided for treating products containing wood fibers to provide protection against wood destroying organisms and fire, and resistance against leaching of the preservative from the wood by water in exposed environments such as exterior applications. The methods involve applying to a substrate a first aqueous composition containing a boron compound, a source of zinc, and ammonia, followed by application of a second aqueous composition containing an alkali metal silicate. The compositions may be applied by vacuum and/or pressure treatment or dip treatment under atmospheric pressure.

Composition of, and process for using, silica xerogel for beer stabilization

A method for making a silica supported catalyst involves impregnating a silica component with a catalytic metal using an aqueous, alkaline bath before drying. More specifically, the method involves forming and washing a silica component, such as a silica gel or a co-gel, for example a silica-zirconia co-gel. Then, the washed silica component is contacted with the alkaline bath to effect the impregnation with the catalytic metal, such as cesium, to form an activated silica component. Subsequently, the activated silica component is dried to form the catalyst. The resulting catalysts demonstrate good mechanical strength.

Method for making silica supported, crush-resistant catalysts

An adsorbent removes certain undesirable components from beverages, such as beer, and has a low beverage soluble iron (BSI) content. These undesirable components include contaminants which cause chill haze. The adsorbent includes two components, a silica component and a polyphosphate sequestering agent component, such as sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP). The process for using the adsorbent involves first contacting a beverage with an adsorbent to adsorb at least a portion of the undesirable components then separating the adsorbent from the beverage. The adsorbent may be formed by one of two methods or a combination of both. The first method involves adding the polyphosphate sequestering agent to a reactant, such as a sodium or potassium silicate solution, prior to or during the gelation stage. A second method involves adding the polyphosphate sequestering agent to the water wash after a hydrogel is formed. The BSI of the adsorbent is substantially reduced using the first method, but the total iron content of the adsorbent appears to increase. The second method decreases both the BSI and the total iron content of the silica gel.

Process for making and using a low beverage soluble iron content adsorbent and composition made thereby

A method for preparing a titanium on silica catalyst, in the form of formed particles such as macrospheres, achieves a controlled titanium distribution type, namely either uniform, eggshell, or intermediate, by selecting the particular titanium precursor depending on its reactivity with hydroxyl groups and by selecting the molar titanium:hydroxyl ratio. Selecting a titanium precursor with a low reactivity and/or adding sufficient titanium precursor to achieve a high molar titanium:hydroxyl ratio aids in forming a uniform distribution of titanium. On the other hand, selecting a titanium precursor with a high reactivity and/or adding only a little titanium precursor resulting in a low molar titanium:hydroxyl ratio aids in forming an eggshell distribution of titanium. Preferred titanium precursors for aiding in the formation of an eggshell distribution of titanium include n-propyl titanate and n-butyl titanate, and preferred titanium precursors for aiding in the formation of a uniform distribution of titanium include titanocene and titanium acetylacetonate. Such silica on titanium catalysts can be used to make epoxidation catalysts, oxidation catalysts, hydroxylation catalysts, and the preferred distribution type depends on the particular application.
