Acid resistant catalyst sheet and process for producing same

There are provided (i) a heat resistant catalyst sheet having an aramid fiber and a catalyst component-containing titania fiber; and (ii) a process for producing a heat resistant catalyst sheet, which has the step of making paper from a mixture of an aramid fiber and a catalyst component-containing titania fiber.

The present invention provides a porous titania, which has an anatase-form crystalline structure, an anatase-form crystallite diameter of 3 nm to 10 nm, a degree of anatase crystallinity of 60% or more, a BET specific surface area of 10 m /g or more, a total pore volume of 0.05 cm /g or more, and a volume for pores having a pore radius of 1 nm or more of 0.02 cm /g or more, and the porous titania and the catalyst comprising the porous titania of the present invention exhibit an excellent catalytic activity for removal of nitrogen oxides, oxidation of organic substances, decomposition of dioxine compounds, as well as decomposition and removal of organic solvents, agricultural chemical and surfactant.

A continuous fiber of titania are made having an average diameter per a monofilament of from 5 to 50 &mgr;m, which has a BET specific surface area of 10 m /g or more, a pore volume of 0.05 cc/g or more, a volume of pores having a pore diameter of not less than 10 angstroms being 0.02 cc/g or more and an average tensile strength per a monofilament of 0.1 GPa or more, or which has an average tensile strength per a monofilament of 0.5 GPa or more.

A continuous fiber of titania are made having an average diameter per a monofilament of from 5 to 50 &mgr;m, which has a BET specific surface area of 10 m,/g or more, a pore volume of 0.05 cc/g or more, a volume of pores having a pore diameter of not less than 10 angstroms being 0.02 cc/g or more and an average tensile strength per a monofilament of 0.1 GPa or more, or which has an average tensile strength per a monofilament of 0.5 GPa or more.

A method for producing a catalyst component-carrying titania fibers is provided, which has large specific surface area, large pore volume and a high catalyst activity. The method comprises steps of adding a catalyst component to the solution of a titanium alkoxide or to the hydrosis/polymerizatin reaction mixture and/or to the spinning solution, and treating a precursor fiber with water vapor before and/or during calcination.

Silica-alumina fibers having good mechanical strength and heat resistance are produced by mixing a polyaluminoxane which comprises repeating units of the formula: ##STR1## in which X is an alkyl group, an alkoxy group or a hydroxy group, a silicon-containing compound in an amount of not larger than 40% by weight in terms of silica based on the weight of silica-alumina fibers to be produced, and an aliphatic carboxylic acid having 2 to 14 carbon atoms in an alkyl group in an amount of 0.03 to 0.4 mole per one gram atom of aluminum to obtain a spinning liquid, spinning the spinning liquid under a condition that a content of nonvolatile materials in the solution is maintained at least 97% by weight to form precursor fibers, and calcining the precursor fibers.
