An information processing apparatus and method which allow a user to readily select, upon transmission of an electronic mail or upon uploading of image data, image data of a plurality of images to be attached to the electronic mail or image data to be transmitted. The user uses a cross key and a determination button of an inputting section of a camcorder: to operate an anchor on an image selection screen, to operate a page backward feeding button and to operate a page feeding button to select a thumbnail image displayed. In response to an operation by the user, the anchor is positioned on the side of the number of the thumbnail image designated by the user, and image data of the thumbnail image at which the anchor is positioned are selected.

An image indicating a copyright and its related information are set through a setting input means and those settings are stored in a related information storing means in advance. Registration image data is recorded in a detachable registration image data recording medium in advance. When an arbitrary image signal is generated by an image generating means, an image combining control means receives the generated image signal and also receives, via a registration image data input means, the registration image data stored in the registration image data recording medium. Further, the image combining control means generates a registration image signal by referring to the setting information and combines it with the arbitrary image signal. An image processing apparatus calculates a feature of an object for recognition with a high degree of accuracy. Image information taken by a camera attached to a robot is first digitized and then stored into an image memory. A program in a robot program storage section includes instructions for operation of the robot and an instruction requesting an image processing CPU to extract a feature for recognition of an object being worked upon (e.g., a ring with a projection). A robot numerical control apparatus for following a program and utilizing, in the program, the result of processing an image obtained by a camera attached to an arm of a robot. Either a first command for displacing the manipulating end of the robot to a designated position or a second command for displacing the center of the output image of the camera to the designated position is selectable as a displacement command to actuate the robot. A coordinate transformer is provided for controlling the movement of the robot's arm with pseudo-control in such a manner that when the second command is selected the center of the sensed image is positioned at the manipulating end of a virtual arm measured from the center of the sensed image to the center of the articulation of the robot's arm equipped with the camera, whereby the subject being photographed can be caught exactly at the image sensing center of the camera attached to the robot's arm.

A high-speed image recognition system operates in response to a binary digitized picture image signal. The system comprises a first memory for storing a bi-level reference image pattern therein, a selector coupled to the first memory for manually designating a plurality of selected points of the bi-level reference image pattern, a detector coupled to the selector for detecting signal levels at each of the points selected by the selector, a second memory coupled to the detector for storing therein detected signal levels obtained from the detector, and a comparator coupled to the second memory for comparing the detected signal levels at the selected points of the bi-level reference image pattern with signal levels at the same points of a candidate image pattern, whereby an object corresponding to the candidate image pattern is recognized.
