An integrator unit for integrating an incoming light beam for a uniform distribution of illumination comprises an inner cylinder fixedly equipped with a rod integrator, an outer cylinder in which the inner cylinder is coaxially received for axial movement and axial adjustment members which comprises a circumferential groove spatially squared to a center axis of the inner cylinder and a radial access bore formed in the outer cylinder. A round shaped position adjustment tool has an end pin on a round end face thereof in a position off center from an axis of rotation of the position adjusting tool. The position adjusting tool is inserted in the radial access bore to put the end pin in the circumferential groove and turned in the radial access bore so as thereby to move the inner cylinder axially back and forth.

Integrator unit

A projection type image display apparatus projects, under magnification by using a projection lens, image information carried by a luminous flux emitted from a ferroelectric liquid crystal display device. A field-sequential color-decomposing illumination optical system generates illumination color light for irradiating the ferroelectric liquid crystal display device. An analyzer and a quarter wave plate are arranged between the ferroelectric liquid crystal display device and the projection lens successively from the ferroelectric liquid crystal display device side.

Projection type image display apparatus

An image synthesizing optical apparatus includes displays for modulating first, second, and third color beams according to image signals and outputting the first, second, and third color beams thus modulated. The optical axis of the second color beam coincides with the optical axis of the first color beam. The optical axis of the third color beam crosses a midpoint between the first and second displays on the optical axes of the first and second color beams. The apparatus has a color beam combining unit at the midpoint and combining the color beams from the respective displays, and a support supporting the foregoing components. The support maintains optical path lengths of the respective color beams from the displays to the color beam combining unit equal even with a change in temperature.

A projection type image display apparatus makes illumination light from a light source section incident on a rectangular reflection type liquid crystal display device by way of a polarization beam splitter, optically modulates the illumination light in the reflection type liquid crystal display device, and projects thus modulated light through a projection lens by way of the polarization beam splitter. A plane including the optical axis of illumination light incident on the polarization beam splitter and the optical axis of illumination light emitted from the polarization beam splitter toward the projection lens is substantially parallel to a direction in which a shorter side of the reflection type liquid crystal display device extends.

Projection type image display apparatus using reflection type liquid crystal display device

The thickness of the projector device can be reduced by making the direction of irradiation of a digital micromirror device (DMD) with illuminating light by an illuminating optical system variable depending on whether the projector device is used or not used. As an illuminating optical system is provided rotatably around an optical axis of a projecting optical system, the position of the illuminating optical system can be varied depending on whether the projector device is used or not used, and the overall thickness of the projector device can be thereby reduced.

A fly eye lens has cells in an optical functional portion, and first, second, and third positioning portions on an outer edge. The first and second positioning portions are located in a region of a plane normal to the optical axis of the lens, divided by a first reference line extending through a center of thermal expansion and located in the plane. The first and second positioning portions have side surfaces located on the first reference line. The third positioning portion has a side surface located on a second reference line intersecting the first reference line, extending through the center of thermal expansion, and located in the plane. Even when the fly eye lens thermally expands, the position of the center of thermal expansion does not change in an optical system, and desired optical performance can be continuously achieved.

Fly eye lens

A light projector is disclosed that enables a bright display image to be presented with minimum waste of useable light. By arranging at least one light directing means, such as a mirror or a reflecting prism, on an optical path between a light source and a light modulator, and by supporting the light directing means using a support that enables the orientation of the light directing means to be rotatably adjusted, the position of a light spot which illuminates the modulator is made to be adjustable in position, thereby enabling the intensity of the light spot on the modulator to be maximized while minimizing vignetting of the light spot by the modulator.
