Provided are: a polyacrylonitrile-based precursor fiber for the production of a carbon fiber having a large single-fiber fineness, said precursor fiber ensuring high heat stability of a spinning dope and excellent productivity; and a copolymer suitable for the production of said precursor fiber. Also provided are: high-quality carbon fiber bundles which have a large single-fiber fineness and excellent productivity; a process for producing the same; and a process for producing flameproofed fiber bundles suitable for the production of the carbon fiber bundles. A polyacrylonitrile-based copolymer which comprises 93.0 to 99.4 mol % of acrylonitrile units, 0.5 to 4.0 mol % of (meth)acrylamide-based units, and 0.1 to 3.0 mol % of unsaturated carboxylic acid hydroxyalkyl ester units and in which the (meth)acrylamide-based units are (meth)acrylamide units and/or (meth)acrylamide derivative units having a molecular weight of 105 or less; a precursor fiber comprising the copolymer; a process for producing flameproofed fiber bundles which uses precursor fiber bundles consisting of the precursor fiber; carbon fiber bundles; and a process for production thereof.

A metal adsorption acrylic fiber wherein the strontium adsorption rate is 85% or more when the strontium adsorption rate is measured using the following measurement method. A strontium adsorption rate measurement method (strontium 0.1 ppm measurement method) involves immersing a metal adsorption acrylic fiber into an immersion fluid, collecting the immersion fluid as a testing solution 24 hours after beginning the immersion, analyzing the quantity of strontium in the testing solution, obtaining the concentration (C) (ppm) of strontium in the testing solution, creating a contrast solution, analyzing the quantity of strontium in the contrast solution as in the case with the testing solution, obtaining the concentration (C) (ppm) of strontium in the contrast solution, and calculating the strontium adsorption rate of the metal adsorption acrylic fiber by using the following equation: strontium adsorption rate (%)={(C&#x2212;C)/C}&#xd7;100.

Metal adsorption acrylic fiber, non-woven fabric, sheet-like product, and uses thereof as metal adsorbent

There is disclosed an acrylic fiber (a) consisting of an acrylonitrile polymer comprising an acrylonitrile unit in at least 80 wt % and less than 95 wt %, (b) having a monofilament dry strength of 2.5 to 4.0 cN/dtex, (c) having a monofilament dry elongation of 35 to 50%, and (d) forming a crack with a length of 20 &mgr;m or more in its tension rupture lateral surface along the filament axis direction when rupturing the monofilament in a tension test. The fiber has even orientation in its surface and inside; is significantly improved in dry strength, dry elongation and dyeability; and exhibits wool-like hand feeling. It is, therefore, quite suitable as a synthetic fiber for various applications such as a garment material, e.g., a sweater and a home furnishing material such as a pile.

The present invention is directed to chitosan-containing acrylic fibers having a total chitosan content of 0.05 to 2% by weight and an extractable chitosan content of not less than 0.03% by weight to less than the total chitosan content. The antimicrobial activity of the chitosan-containing acrylic fibers of the present invention can persist for a long period of time and is not deteriorated even when subjected to posttreatments, such as dyeing and bleaching of fibers, and treatments in usual service environments of fiber products, such as washing and ironing.
