The printing apparatus includes a conveying unit that conveys a print medium; a print head that applies a color material on the print medium; an obtaining unit configured to obtain, in the case where a first surface of the print medium on which a first image is printed comes in contact with the conveying unit, information on a printing condition of the first surface that becomes a factor of changing a conveying speed of the print medium in the predetermined direction; and a control unit configured to control timing of applying a color material on a second surface of the print medium that is a surface at the opposite to the first surface according to the printing condition indicated by the information obtained by the obtaining unit.

A print control method performed by a print control apparatus. The method includes acquiring data indicating a state of a surface of a disk medium obtained by optically reading the surface of the disk medium, determining a printable area for printing an image on the disk medium based on the acquired data, generating print data based on image data stored in a memory for printing on the determined printable area on the disk medium, and causing a printing apparatus to print an image represented by the image data stored in the memory on the determined printable area on the disk medium, based on the generated print data.

An image scanning unit scans a mark-sense sheet to read editing information for specifying edit modes for editing image data to be output as one page of print data. On the basis of the read editing information, print data is generated from the image data. The editing information is read from grouping marks for grouping photo images, rotation marks, and the like. Photo images divided into groups by marking the grouping marks are output on one page of print data in orientations specified by marking the rotation marks.

A detection unit to optically detect a discharge condition of a droplet is disclosed. The detection unit includes a light emitting element and a light receiving element disposed on opposite sides of an area through which a droplet discharged from a droplet-discharger passes. A diaphragm plate having an aperture and another diaphragm plate having at least two apertures arranged at a pitch in a discharge direction are respectively disposed near front surfaces of the two elements. When light emitted from the light emitting element passes through the apertures, two light beams are received by the light receiving element. When the droplet is discharged and passes in front of the apertures, the two light beams are blocked sequentially by the ink droplet, which causes the quantity of light received by the light receiving element to change, thereby inducing a change in an output from the light receiving element. Based on the change in the output, a discharge-condition of the droplet is determined.

A recording head includes an ink-discharging surface and nozzles. The ink-discharging surface is provided with ink-discharging ports of the nozzles. A light-emitting element and a light-receiving element are disposed opposite each other close to the ink-discharging surface. The light-receiving element outputs a detection signal. A reflector is provided on the ink-discharging surface and reflects light emitted from the light-emitting element toward the light-receiving element. One of the nozzles is driven and whether the nozzle discharges an ink drop is checked on the basis of change in the detection signal due to interception of the reflected light by the ink drop. If the nozzle discharges an ink drop, then whether the nozzle discharges the ink drop in an appropriate direction is checked on the basis of change in the detection signal due to interception of the direct light by the ink drop.

A recording apparatus includes a conveying unit for conveying a recording medium, a conveying motor for driving the conveying unit, an encoder for outputting a signal in accordance with the operating amount of the conveying unit, and a generating unit for generating an interruption signal when the conveying motor is stopped. The operating amount of the conveying unit is counted during a predesignated period beginning with the output of the interruption signal, and in accordance with the obtained count value, nozzles used for recording are selected and image recording is performed. With the above configuration, the recording apparatus removes problems, such as when a conveying unit conveys a recording medium, the halted position is shifted and the quality of an image formed on the recording medium is degraded, or when the conveying unit is operated to correct the position shifting, throughput is reduced.
