A method simultaneously drives a plurality of lines of a display employing an antiferroelectric liquid crystal material. The polarity of the start of a waveform applied to a first one of the simultaneously selected lines is opposite to the polarity of the starts of waveforms applied to the other simultaneously selected lines. Each select period is divided into n sections. A data waveform applied to any one of data electrodes (column electrodes) of the display in synchronization with the select waveforms is determined according to column vectors of a unit matrix of n rows by n columns. The sign of a first one of the n column vectors is inverted. A maximum among voltages applied to pixels of the display must be sufficiently larger than the threshold of the ferroelectric liquid crystal material. The absolute value of the threshold is set between the sum of and the difference between the absolute values of the select and data waveforms.

A liquid crystal panel has a memory function that is reliable for a long time. The panel employs a ferroelectric or antiferroelectric liquid crystal material involving at least two kinds of layer structures of minimum energy. The layer structures are defined at least by (1) a c-director parameter that is in parallel with substrates of the panel and has at least one minimal value, or (2) an a-director parameter that is orthogonal to the substrates and has at least one maximal value. Due to these layer structures, the panel is stable, resistant to mechanical and electrical stress, reliable in operation, and excellent in memory function.

A precision liquid crystal spatial optical modulator device capable of being controlled by electric signals is realized using fine structure electrodes below a thickness of a liquid crystal layer, bringing adjacent electrodes close to one another, and driving them interconnectedly so as to spatially and finely control both liquid crystal molecule layers oriented immediately below the driving electrodes and immediately below the electrode gaps. A fine structure optical diffraction grating capable of electronic control which improves pattern positional accuracy of a liquid crystal optical modulator devices, reduces a pattern formation error and improves an aperture ratio of the liquid crystal modulator device can realized.

A display device including a liquid crystal cell which comprises first and second transparent substrates spaced apart substantially in parallel from each other to form a gap therebewteen, a body of twisted-nematic liquid crystal filing the gap between the substrates, orientation means urging the liquid crystal molecules in the gap to orient in a first direction in the vicinity of the inner face of the first substrate and in a second direction in the vicinity of the inner face of the second substrate, the first direction being substantially perpendicular to the second direction, a pair of polarizer films one overlying the first substrate and the other underlying the second substrate, and at least one phase-shift film intervening between one of the first and second substrates and one of the polarizer films.
