Provided is a production process for &#x3b1;-olefin which does not comply the Shultz-Flory distribution and which is excellent in the yields of &#x3b1;-olefins of 1-hexene up to 1-tetradecene each having 6 to 14 carbon atoms, particularly a yield of 1-octene. A catalyst which is able to express a high oligomerizing activity of ethylene and a method for the production of &agr;-olefin where ethylene is oligomerized using said catalyst are provided. The present invention relates to a catalyst for the production of &agr;-olefin obtained by contacting (a) clay, clay mineral or ion-exchange layer compound with (b-1) a transition metal complex of Groups 4 to 6 of the Periodic Table and also relates to a method for the production of &agr;-olefin by oligomerization of ethylene using said catalyst. The present invention further relates to a catalyst for the production of &agr;-olefin obtained by contacting (a) clay, clay mineral or ion-exchange layer compound with (b-2) a transition metal complex of Groups 8 to 10 of the Periodic Table and also relates to a method of the production of &agr;-olefin by oligomerization of ethylene using said catalyst.

A solid catalyst containing a potassium component and an iron oxide component, which is such that the ratio of the pore volume of pores therein having a diameter of from 20 to 100 nm to that of pores therein having a diameter of up to 100 nm falls between 0.7/1 and 0.9/1 and which is stable to oxygen-containing vapor, is favorably used as a dehydrogenation catalyst in producing vinyl-aromatic hydrocarbons from alkyl-aromatic hydrocarbons. The catalyst has high initial activity and good initial selectivity and its life is long. In addition, it is easy to handle. The catalyst may be produced by reducing a potassium component-containing iron oxide composition with hydrogen at a temperature falling between 350 and 600&deg; C., and then oxidizing it with an oxygen molecules-containing vapor at a temperature falling between 250 and 500&deg; C.

An iron oxide catalyst for dehydrogenation of an alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon, wherein the catalyst is produced by adding potassium oxide to an iron oxide. The catalyst contains potassium ferrite. The catalyst has a ratio of a pore volume having a pore diameter of from 20 to 100 nm to a pore volume having a pore diameter of from 0 to 100 nm of between 0.7 and 9.0. The catalyst exhibits an excellent initial activity and has a substantially long catalyst life.

Catalyst for dehydrogenation of alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon and process

Disclosed herein is a process for producing a linear .alpha.-olefin by the oligomerization of ethylene, characterized in that the oligomerization is carried out in the presence of a catalyst composed of (A) titanium halide or zirconium halide, (B) an organoaluminum compound, and (C) an alcohol (methanol and/or ethanol). The linear .alpha.-olefin has an extremely high purity because it is not contaminated with the catalyst components.

Production of linear .alpha.-olefin

In a method for the production of linear .alpha.-olefins by the oligomerization of ethylene in the presence of a catalyst system composed of (A) zirconium tetrachloride, (B-a) ethyl aluminum sesquichloride and (B-b) triethyl aluminum, an improvement is proposed which comprises using the catalyst system prepared in a specific procedure in which one of the essential conditions is the order of successive introduction of the three components along with the concentration of zirconium tetrachloride, temperature and length of time. It is essential that introduction of the component (B-b) is not preceded by the contacting of the components (A) and (B-a). Accoridng to the invention, the reaction product contains the species of the linear .alpha.-olefin compounds having higher usefulness than other species in a greatly increased yield.

Production of linear alpha-olefins

A process for preparing a linear .alpha.-olefin having from 4 to 20 carbon atoms is disclosed which comprises polymerizing ethylene or gas containing ethylene in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a zirconium halide, an organoaluminium compound and a Lewis base, and adding a catalyst deactivating agent to the resulting reaction mixture, wherein said Lewis base is at least one member selected from the group consisting of thioethers, alkyl disulfides, thiophenes, thiourea, sulfides, phosphines and primary amines. Use of the catalyst enables preparation of linear .alpha.-olefins of a high purity and reduction in the amount of by-produced wax.
