A method and apparatus for detecting the positions of a plurality of position indicators using a tablet or the like. After a first position indicator has been detected by an all-scan step, sensor coils to be scanned are specified according to the positional information of the first position indicator. A sector-scan step then performs a more detailed detection of the position of the first position indicator. The sector-scan step and the all-scan step for detecting the approximate position of a second position indicator are implemented alternately. The sector-scan is carried out more frequently than the all-scan.

Position detecting method and apparatus for detecting a plurality of position indicators

A position detecting apparatus capable of detecting position pointing devices of any combination simultaneously out of plural position pointing devices, thereby providing a user a friendly apparatus. A frequency of a resonance circuit provided inside a position pointing device is set by a command signal transmitted from a tablet, causing plural position pointing devices placed on the tablet to have a different frequencies, thereby suppressing electromagnetic interference among position pointing devices on the tablet, so that a simultaneous detection becomes available.

A pen shaped position pointing device used in a position detecting apparatus. A pen-tip segment has side pressure detectors to detect pressure from side directions. The side pressure detectors detect the pen pressure even when the pen is tilted with a large angle. Provision is made for detecting rotation of the dial, and for detecting relative pressure between the position pointing device and the position detecting apparatus.

A coordinate detecting device and an angle information detecting method which are capable of detecting tilt angles of a stylus pen with high accuracy. A coordinate detecting device is made up of a plurality of sensor coils and a position indicator housing an electromagnetic coupling means, and detects coordinates and tilt angles of the position indicator by sensing an induced voltage developed in the sensor coil by means of electromagnetic interaction. The coordinate detecting device is also provided with an angle information detecting means. This angle information detecting means correct errors in a value of a predetermined function including main and sub-peaks, the errors arising from a difference between a main peak induced voltage distribution and a sub-peak induced voltage distribution within a detection width of one sensor coil, by converting either the main peak induced voltage distribution or the sub-peak induced voltage distribution so as to be similar to the other one. Then, the angle information detecting means calculate tilt angles of the position indicator using a predetermined function including the sub-peak induced voltage and the corrected main peak induced voltage.

The method provides at least a coordinate value of a position indicated by the position indicator and an inclination of the position indicator in relation to the sensor plane by the use of a value of a sensing signal including a main peak value and at least one subpeak value, both being obtained from interactive action between the position indicator and a specified sensor coil from the group of sensor coils.
