The decision unit decides a candidate for a printing medium type based on the acquired measurement result, and a reference characteristic value of each of printing media types set in advance to identify a type of the measured printing medium. Information associated with the printing medium type to be printed is input. The determination unit determines whether to change the reference characteristic value of the printing medium type associated with the input information based on the measurement result and the printing medium type associated with the input information. Wherein, when the determination unit determines to change the reference characteristic value, the change unit changes the reference characteristic value of the printing medium type based on the measurement result.

A communication apparatus capable of transmitting image data in a form capable of reducing a running cost is provided. When a plurality of pages of image data to be transmitted can be recorded on one record sheet at a receiving station, a plurality of pages of image data are combined into one page of image data for transmission within a range in which the image data are recorded on one sheet at the receiving station and in such a manner that the plurality of pages of image data are recorded on the record sheet in vertically evenly divided areas. When a plurality of pages of image data to be transmitted can be recorded on one record sheet at the receiving station, main scan lengths of the plurality of pages of image data are made equal and the plurality of pages of image data are combined into one page of image data for transmission within a range in which the image data are recorded on one record sheet at the receiving station and in such a manner that the image data are recorded on the record sheet in evenly divided areas.

An image processing method comprises the steps of setting a trash image candidate by defining the set of locations of the quadratic differential value of the lightness component of pixel signals, which changes from the value exceeding a positive first threshold value to the value less than a negative second threshold value for the adjacent pixels in a digital image, as the contours of such trash image candidate, extracting the trash area by defining it from among the trash area candidates having the changes of lightness components and saturation components between inner adjacent pixels within a specific range, and interpolating the pixel signals in the trash area in order of larger pixel numbers having effective pixels by use of the signals of effective circumferential pixels. Here, the pixels whose interpolation has been executed are used as new effective pixels, thus making it possible to interpolate the pixels in the trash area from the outer side to the inner side one after another. For the pixels having the same numbers of the adjacently effective pixels, the pixels are interpolated after obtaining only interpolated values of all of them. Hence, the trash images are removed for image correction effectively without deteriorating the quality of original image in the area other than the trash area.

A communication apparatus can transmit image data stored in a memory in a manner capable of reducing the running cost. The number of input lines for each page is recognized for image data of a plurality of pages input and stored in the memory. When transmitting the stored image data of the plurality of pages, the number of recordable lines per page of a recording sheet used in a communication partner's terminal is recognized, and image data for one page obtained by combining image data of a plurality of consecutive pages is transmitted. The reception side combines a maximum number of image data for a plurality of pages recordable on a single recording sheet, and transmits the obtained image data as image data for one page. Image data of different files for the same communication partner are also combined in the above-described manner.

A recording apparatus records image data without wastefully consuming record sheets. Received image data are combined in a sub-scan direction, and if a sub-scan length of the combined image data does not exceed a sub-scan length of a record sheet loaded in the apparatus, the combined data is recorded on one record sheet. When main scan lengths of image data of a plurality of pages combined are different from each other, the image data are reduced to comply to a record sheet of a minimum main scan length. When resolutions of image data of a plurality of pages combined are different from each other, the resolutions are converted to a minimum resolution and they are recorded.

A communication apparatus includes an ink jet type printer capable of shifting from a normal operation mode to a low power consumption mode in a stand-by state by rendering the printer to a sleep mode. A recovery level of the printer at the time of wakeup from the sleep mode is based on an elapsed time that is counted from a previous recovery execution time, and a recovery operation is based on the determined recovery level. In another aspect, in the power saving mode, a printer processing unit is not enabled, but then is enabled in reply to a change from the power saving mode to the normal mode, and a communication processing unit transfers control data to the printer processing unit in response to the change from the power saving mode to the normal mode to be used for controlling the printer unit.

A communication apparatus suppresses an unnecessary recovery operation when the communication apparatus is raised from a low power consumption mode to a normal operation mode to shorten a time before a printer unit is ready for printing. When the printer unit wakes up from a sleep mode, a time counted by a recovery timer in a facsimile control unit is sent to the printer unit as time data through a bilateral path. A CPU in the printer unit adds time data stores in an NVRAM at the time of entry of the facsimile apparatus to the low power consumption mode to the sent time data to determine the recovery level based on the sum time data and the recovery operation is executed. When the supply of power to an ink jet printer is stopped to reduce the power consumption, a timer in the printer and a bilateral record correction value deviate so that the recovery operation which is to be executed at an interval of 72 hours cannot be executed at the correct time interval. A non-power-supply time of the printer is notified from the main unit to the printer through a serial communication unit when the power is supplied to the printer next time in stopping the supply of power to the printer for power saving so that the timer in the printer is corrected.
