A stitch balancing thread tension of a sewing machine includes a rotary disk having a surface extending perpendicular to an axial direction of a shaft on which the rotary disk is mounted. The thread breakage detection device includes a permanent magnet member attached to the surface of the rotary disk , a hole element that detects a magnetic field generated at the permanent magnet member and outputs detection signals, and a detection unit that detects the thread breakage based on the detection signals from the hole element . Because the thread breakage detection device is integrally formed to the stitch balancing thread tension , the thread breakage detection device can be provided to the sewing machine without increasing a number of components and the size of the sewing machine

In a presser foot device of a sewing machine, a presser foot is vertically movably supported to a sewing machine body frame by a presser bar. A drive device moves the presser bar up and down in accordance with a drive signal. A sensor detects when the presser foot is raised close to a top dead center position, that is, a predetermined position. Based on the detection by the sensor, a control device controls the drive signal for the presser foot drive device.
