An image recording apparatus records an image on a recording medium by causing a recording head having an arrangement of a plurality of recording elements to conduct its main scanning for the recording medium interrelatedly in the direction opposite to the arrangement of the recording elements. A printing apparatus and an ink-discharge status detection method which perform appropriate print control by detecting discharge failure with a simple construction, without reducing the printing speed. The apparatus, to which the method is applied, performs test ink discharge from a part of nozzles of a printhead while scanning the printhead, and detects ink discharge statuses of the nozzles of the printhead by using a photosensor in an area between the home position of the printhead and a position outside of an effective printing area. In next detection, nozzles different from those used in the previous test ink discharge are used for performing test ink discharge, and discharge statuses are detected. Discharge statuses of all the nozzles are detected in forward and backward scannings or a plurality of scannings.

An optical encoder has a light irradiating device; an optical scale having a grating for transmitting or reflecting incident light; light-receiving elements disposed in a plurality of different directions; and an optical system for amplitude-modulating light traveling from the light irradiating device to the optical scale and transmitted or reflected by the grating, by a dividing element in which a plurality of V-shaped grooves are juxtaposed, and for dividing the amplitude-modulated light into beams along a plurality of different directions to guide the beams to the respective light-receiving elements. The dividing element is comprised of repetitions of such structure that a plurality of V-grooves consisting of planes of mutually different angles are juxtaposed at a predetermined pitch.

Optical encoder

A printing apparatus and a print control method which detect a defective printing element in operation failure status while reciprocate-scanning a printhead, and perform appropriate print control such as complementary printing on an unprinted portion by the defective printing element, without reducing the printing speed. An apparatus, to which the method is applied, has a photosensor to detect ink discharge statuses of a plurality of nozzles of a printhead which is provided between a home position of the printhead and the outside of an effective printing area where image printing is to be made. While the printhead is scanned, test ink discharge is performed at the position of the photosensor and the ink discharge statuses of the nozzles are detected by the photosensor A corrector analyzes the operation statuses of the nozzles of the printhead based on the results of detection in a real time manner. A CPU performs print control based on the results of analysis.

In an ink-jet printing apparatus, upon turning on the power source of the printing apparatus, a stirring operation of ink in the main tank is performed for a given period of time, and during subsequent printing operation, the stirring operation in the main tank is performed for the given period at every predetermined elapsed time period. By this, the printing operation for a long period can be performed employing ink having a water insoluble dye without causing a problem of admixing of bubble or so forth caused by stirring of the ink in the main tank.

Ink-jet printing apparatus

A density difference correction signal is generated for correcting a density difference upon forward path printing and backward path printing by density difference correction signal generating apparatus to store the generated density difference correction signal in an unevenness correction RAM. A predetermined correction line in a HS table memory is selected depending upon the density difference correction signal. By the selected correction line, the density correction of the image data of forward path printing and backward path printing is performed to output the image data.

An ink jet textile printing method forms an image on cloths in an image forming operation by repeating a step of applying ink on the cloths from an ink discharge port of a recording head, the recording head relatively main-scanning to form the image in a main scan direction, and a step of relatively conveying the cloths in a sub-scan direction. The method includes the steps of forming the image on the cloths by applying ink on the cloths from the recording head based on image data. The method further includes the step of temporarily stopping the image forming operation in accordance with an indication to effect a temporary halt of the image forming operation. When the temporary halt is indicated while the recording head performs a main scan in the image forming operation, the image forming operation by the main scan is completed, and then the temporary halt of the image forming operation is effected by moving the recording head to a standby position. The method still further includes the step of releasing the temporary halt of the image forming operation and restarting the image forming operation in accordance with an indication for releasing the temporary halt of the image forming operation. When the release of the temporary halt is indicated, ink is discharged from the ink discharge port and then the image forming operation is restarted.
