This invention is a composition having anti-thrombogenic properties, comprising as essential constituent components a polyurethane or polyurethane urea containing polytetramethylene oxide in its main chain, a water soluble and/or water swellable macromolecules, and a silicon-containing compound capable of forming polysiloxane while crosslinking; and a blood contact medical device having such a composition on blood contact surfaces. According to this invention, it is possible to provide on blood contact surfaces a hydrophilic polymer which is excellent in dynamic properties and very rich in the antithrombogenic properties, and the invention can be greatly contributory in the field of blood contact medical devices.

Disclosed is a medical tube comprising a mono-layer medical tube comprising a high molecular weight compound, wherein the inner texture of a tube wall constituting the tube is porous and no skin layer is present on the inner face of the tube wall. The porous inner texture of the tube is microscopically spongy and contains cells or voids interconnected by pores. The inner wall of the tube contains concavities which open into the cells or voids and communicates them with any fluid flowing through the tube. Disclosed is also a process for producing a medical tube, comprising thrusting forward a core rod having a round cross-section and made of a rigid body from a circular orifice to extrude a solution of a high molecular weight compound from a gap slit defined between the orifice and the core rod in such a manner that the solution is spread over the whole surface of the core rod, and leading the core rod in a solidifying medium to solidify the high molecular weight compound around the core rod, followed by taking out the core rod. The medical tubes of this invention or the medical tubes produced by the present process has excellent compatibility with blood, particularly is suitable for an artificial blood vessel which is required to have excellent long term patency.

The present invention relates to an artificial heart which comprises a housing, a brim forming a cover of the said housing, a blood introduction pipe and a blood discharge pipe which are incorporated as one piece with the said brim, a blood introduction valve and a blood discharge valve, respectively fitted to the said blood introduction pipe and the said blood discharge pipe and a blood chamber connected to the said brim and communicated with the said blood introduction pipe and the said blood discharge pipe. In the present invention, the said brim is designed to be elastically deformable in accordance with pulsation of the said blood chamber so as to lighten the burdens of the said blood introduction valve and the said blood discharge valve.

A method of manufacturing a hollow fiber which comprises providing a spinning solution of a water miscible organic solvent and a high molecular weight compound which may be polyacrylonitrile, a copolymer of acrylonitrile, alpha cellulose, a cellulose ester, polymethylmethacrylate, poly vinyl chloride, or poly-.gamma.-benzyl glutamate. This spinning solution is extruded through an annular slit while simultaneously, an alkaline or acid aqueous salt solution is extruded from an orifice encircled by the annular slit.
