An arrangement serves to swirl air flow into an engine to an adjustable degree. The degree of swirl in the air flow affects the duration of combustion of a mixture of air and fuel in the engine. The degree of swirl is adjusted so as to hold the duration of mixture combustion within an acceptable range, the acceptable range varying in accordance with engine operating conditions.

Engine combustion control system

In order to accurately control the operation of the engine while still achieving near optimal swirl rate control, the swirl is controlled by a valve which is separate from the engine throttle valve and which is basically controlled in response to the pressure prevailing across the same. Various operating parameters such as the instant air-fuel ratio of the charge being combusted in the combustion chambers are utilized to modify prerecorded values to those which will induce the best setting for the valve.

Swirl control arrangement for internal combustion engine

A filter is disposed in the exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine in order to trap particles suspended in exhaust gas. A burner serves to burn off the particles deposited on the filter. Either the pressure in the exhaust passage at a point upstream of the filter or the pressure difference in the exhaust passage across the filter is selectively sensed. In place of sensing the pressure difference, the pressure in the exhaust passage at a point downstream of the filter may be sensed. The ratio between the upstream pressure and the pressure difference, or the ratio between the upstream pressure and downstream pressure is determined an as indication of the degree of clogging of the filter. The burner is operated on the basis of this ratio.

A fuel supply system for an internal combustion engine is disclosed which includes a single fuel injection valve provided at the area at which a plurality of branch passages of an intake manifold join, and a pressure regulator which regulates the pressure of the fuel supplied to the fuel injection valve in accordance with a vacuum pressure in an intake manifold. According to this system, during low load condition, the pressure of the fuel supplied to the fuel injection valve is held within a range of levels lower than that appearing during high load conditions, thereby increasing the duration during which the fuel injection valve is opened in synchronism with the operation of each cylinder. Thereby, this system makes it possible to uniformly supply fuel to each cylinder for all running conditions of the vehicle.

An engine system comprises an internal combustion engine and an exhaust gas treatment system, such as a three-way catalytic converter or an oxidation catalytic converter. The engine has an additional intake means, in addition to a main intake means for admitting by induction an air fuel mixture to a combustion chamber, for admitting under pressure above atmospheric pressure air to the combustion chambers during a period initiating during the exhaust stroke and terminating during the intake stroke for the purpose of expelling residual gas from the combustion chamber to bring about a stable combustion.

Engine system

An electronic controlled carburetor has an induction passage into which fuel is fed by a fuel metering system communicated with the atmosphere through main and auxiliary air bleed passages. The main and auxiliary air bleed passages have therein main and auxiliary solenoid valves, respectively, for altering the rate of air flow therethrough. A control circuit determines the duty ratio of a first pulse signal applied to the main solenoid valve in response to an air/fuel ratio indicative signal from an oxygen sensor. The control circuit determines the duty ratio of a second pulse signal applied to the auxiliary solenoid valve from the duty ratio of the first pulse signal so as to permit the main solenoid valve to operate around 50% duty ratio over all engine operating modes.

An engine is provided with two spark plugs in each combustion chamber to ignite stoichiometric air-fuel mixture mixed with a large proportion of inert gases to lower NOx emission level. The engine is equipped with hydraulic valve lifters which are mechanically connected to intake and exhaust valves to control the valve overlap of the intake and exhaust valves. By the action of the valve lifters, the valve overlaps are increased in the normal driving operation range of the engine to prevent discharge at the terminal stage of exhaust valve opening exhaust gases containing a considerably large amount of hydrocarbons.

A knocking discrimination apparatus in which an output signal derived from a knocking sensor is held at an almost constant level regardless of condition of an internal combustion engine by means of providing a control circuit therein for controlling the output signal of the knocking sensor to be held at the almost constant level, and further the above constantly held output signal of the knocking sensor and a constantly settled reference signal are compared with each other for discrimination of knocking, so that such a remarkable effect can be obtained that the reliability of the discrimination of knocking is improved exceedingly on account of a reliable reference signal for comparison ensured by being maintained at a constant level persistently and stably.

A combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine has the form of a B-shaped chamber which consists of two spheroidal or spherical contiguous chambers which form an inwardly extending projection against which the air and fuel mixture impinges so as to be divided into two swirl flows which sweep residual burned gases of the previous cycle in the combustion chamber, thereby preventing knocking in the operation of the engine to improve the fuel consumption, driving performance and output of the engine.

A control system for an internal combustion engine comprises a transducer for issuing a signal representative of combustion pressure in a combustion chamber, a unit consisting of a bandpass filter and a wave-form shaping circuit for issuing a signal representative of existing combustion timing of the combustion chamber by processing the signal from the transducer for detection of rapid increase of the combustion pressure; a reference timing circuit for issuing a signal representative of a predetermined reference combustion timing of the combustion chamber in accordance with operation modes of the engine, a comparator circuit for issuing a signal representative of a difference between the signal from the unit and the signal from the reference timing circuit, and a unit consisting of a discriminating circuit and an actuator driving circuit for controlling the ignition timing, the air-fuel ratio of air-fuel mixture and the amount of exhaust gas recirculated into the intake system of the engine, by processing the signal from the comparator circuit.

Feedback control system for internal combustion engine

An engine system of the invention comprises an internal combustion engine; a carburetor; an exhaust gas recirculation system; an exhaust gas treatment device; and a source of secondary air, in which there is provided a fluid network which interconnects the source of secondary air, the engine exhaust system at a position upstream of the exhaust gas treatment device and the exhaust gas recirculation system at a position upstream of an exhaust gas recirculation valve and there is also provided an air injection control valve fluidly disposed in the fluid network intermediate the source of secondary air and the exhaust gas recirculation system. The air injection control valve is adapted to selectively permit and prevent the admission of air to the exhaust gas recirculation system. A controller for the air injection control valve is also disclosed which comprises a detector that generates as an output signal a first signal responsive to urban driving conditions which are empirically determined to occur when the motor vehicle is driven in urban areas and a second signal responsive to rural driving conditions which are empirically determined to occur when the motor vehicle is driven in rural areas. The controller causes the air injection valve to permit the admission of air to the EGR system when the detector detects the rural driving conditions.
