The incorporation of &egr;-polylysine or salt thereof (&egr;PL) having a water content of not more than 15% by weight in a resin composition makes it possible to obtain an antibacterial resin composition excellent in antibacterial capacity and safe in use. Since the &egr;PL can be fairly dispersed in the resin, the resulting molded article is not liable to destruction of external appearance. Accordingly, the antibacterial resin composition of the present invention can find good and wide application in medical sanitary goods, tableware, daily necessaries, automobile interior material, household appliance, film, sheet, fiber, coating compound such as paint, ink, and other goods which must be antibacterial. Further, the molded articles obtained from the resin composition according to the present invention can maintain its antibacterial effect even after repeated use and thus can be used over an extended period of time.

A valve operating mechanism for an internal combustion engine having a plurality of exhaust valves per cylinder comprises a device for driving the exhaust valves in a same cylinder at such a valve timing that makes opening of the exhaust valves with a phase difference, i.e., at different timings relative to a crank angle. In one aspect of this invention, the exhaust valves open at the different times and close at the same time.

An engine valve operating system for an internal combustion engine comprises a rocker arm for transferring valve actuating effect from a driving cam to an engine valve such as an intake or exhaust valve. An elongate lever or fulcrum member is pivoted at its one end section and disposed in fulcrum contact with the side of the rocker arm opposite to the driving cam. A fuel injection apparatus for an internal combustion engine has at least one fuel injection valve. An annular or ring-shaped electrode is mounted near the fuel injection valve to encircle the injected fuel. A high voltage generator produces an electric field between the electrode and the fuel injection valve as well as a surrounding wall which are both connected to the ground. Electrified fuel particles are finely atomized and prevented from attaching onto the surrounding wall to improve the operation, starting characteristic, and transient response of the engine.

An exhaust gas recirculation system for an internal combustion engine includes an exhaust gas recirculation passage for communicating an exhaust port with an intake passage through a recirculation flow control valve. The recirculation system according to the invention comprises a timing valve in the recirculation passage adapted to open at specified moments for extracting exhaust gases containing highly concentrated hydrocarbons. According to the invention, moreover, the exhaust port is concentrically divided into a plurality of ports to extract exhaust gases having high concentrations of hydrocarbons from the outermost divided port adjacent to the inner peripheral walls of the exhaust port to recirculate them into intake mixtures, thereby reducing the concentrations of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in exhaust gases and thus fuel consumption.
