A balloon catheter and a method for arranging a balloon are disclosed, which are capable of suppressing the separation of a drug with which an outer surface of a balloon is coated. A balloon catheter in which a balloon with an outer surface coated with a drug is disposed to an inside of a protective tube, in which: the balloon includes a plurality of wing portions that protrude radially outward, and a plurality of base portions that are in contact with an inner tube; each of the plurality of wing portions include a wing distal end portion that is positioned on a protruding side, a wing proximal end portion that is connected to the base portion, and a wing middle portion that is positioned between the wing distal end portion and the wing proximal end portion.

A folding method of an inflatable balloon disposed on an outer peripheral surface of an inner tube of a balloon catheter is disclosed. The method includes: disposing the balloon to an inner side of a plurality of first blade portions arranged so as to surround a reference position while maintaining a state where pressure is applied to an inside of the balloon; correcting a bend of the balloon by moving the plurality of first blade portions toward the reference position in the state where the pressure is applied to the inside of the balloon; pleating a plurality of wing portions protruding radially outward on the balloon by further moving the plurality of first blade portions toward the reference position to partially press the balloon while gradually discharging the fluid inside the balloon; and folding the balloon along the inner tube.

A balloon catheter is disclosed, the balloon catheter is provided on an outer surface of a balloon with a plurality of elongate bodies which are independent crystals of a water-insoluble drug extending in an elongate form. The elongate bodies include fixed-side elongate bodies which are fixed to the outer surface side of the balloon, and top-side elongate bodies which are bent or broken from the fixed-side elongate bodies and are continuous with or independent of the fixed-side elongate bodies.

Drug layer applying device and method for forming drug layer

A drug coating layer that prevents breakage of elongated drug crystals on a balloon surface while maintaining the drug crystals in an appropriate shape to act on the living body includes plural elongated bodies which are crystals of a water-insoluble drug each extending from the surface of the balloon at various lengths and angles, and a water-soluble additive layer provided in a space between an outer surface of an aggregate of the elongated bodies and the balloon surface to fill a space between the elongated bodies. The outer surface of the additive layer being located outside the aggregate, being uneven connecting a plurality of tip ends and side surfaces of the elongated bodies to each other. The tip ends of the elongated bodies slightly protrude from the additive layer, and the side surfaces and/or tip surfaces of the elongated body are exposed on the surface of the additive layer.

Drug coating layer and method for forming same

A balloon catheter by which a drug can be effectively delivered to living body tissue and a method of manufacturing the balloon catheter, and a treatment method. The balloon catheter is provided on an outer surface of a balloon with a plurality of elongate bodies which are independent crystals of a water-insoluble drug that extend in an elongate form. The elongate bodies have long axes extending in directions along the outer surface of the balloon when the balloon is in a deflated state. Deformation, when the balloon is inflated from the deflated state, of portions on an outer surface side of the balloon to which end portions of the elongate bodies are fixed causes a force to act on the elongate bodies such that the long axes of the elongate bodies approach perpendicularity to the outer surface of the balloon.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for forming a drug coating layer capable of preventing breakage of elongated drug crystals on a surface of a balloon and maintaining the drug crystals in an appropriate shape in order to act on a living body. The method includes supplying a coating solution which contains the water-insoluble drug, a water-soluble additive, an organic solvent, and water to the surface of the balloon and evaporating the organic solvent and the water to form an additive layer containing the water-soluble additive and a protruding crystal having a tip end protruding from the additive layer, cutting a surplus portion protruding from the additive layer of the protruding crystal from a part surrounded by the additive layer and forming the part surrounded by the additive layer as the elongated body, and removing the cut-out surplus portion from the drug coating layer.

Method and apparatus for forming drug coating layer

A balloon catheter that includes an elongated main body extending in an axial direction and a balloon connected to the distal portion of the elongated main body. The balloon includes an interior and is inflatable and deflatable. The balloon catheter also includes a plurality of elongate bodies extending radially away from the outer surface of the balloon. The elongate bodies are crystals of a water-insoluble drug. The elongate bodies each possess an independent longitudinal axis. Each of the elongate bodies includes a base portion at the proximal end of the elongate body. A plurality of elongate body proximal portions extend radially inwardly from the base portion of each of the elongate bodies toward the interior of the balloon. The elongate body proximal portions are continuous extensions of the crystal of the water-insoluble drug.

Balloon catheter and manufacturing method thereof, and treatment method

A balloon catheter includes an elongated main body extending in an axial direction and a balloon connected to the elongated main body. The balloon is inflatable and deflatable in the radial direction. The outer surface of the balloon includes a plurality of recesses that are spaced apart from one another. The balloon catheter also includes a plurality of elongate bodies on the outer surface of the balloon. The elongate bodies are crystals of a water-insoluble drug extending in the radial direction of the balloon away from the interior of the balloon. The elongate bodies each possess an independent long axis. At least two elongate bodies of the elongate bodies are positioned in one of the recesses in the outer surface of the balloon. These two elongate bodies extend from within the recess to a surrounding environment in the radial direction of the balloon.

A balloon catheter that includes an elongated main body, a balloon connected to the elongated main body, and a base layer on the outer surface of the balloon. The base layer includes a water-soluble low-molecular weight compound. The balloon catheter also includes a plurality of elongate bodies extending radially away from the outer surface of the balloon. The elongate bodies are crystals of a water-insoluble drug. The elongate bodies each possesses an independent longitudinal axis. At least part of at least some of the elongate bodies are located in the interior of the base layer on the outer surface of the balloon.

A balloon catheter is disclosed having a balloon at a distal portion of a catheter shaft and on a surface of the balloon are elongate bodies which are crystals of a water-insoluble drug having independent long axes. The balloon in a deflated state has a plurality of wing portions in a circumferential direction of the balloon, and a circumferential surface portion along a circumferential direction of the catheter shaft, the plurality of wing portions being folded along the circumferential direction of the balloon. A surface of the circumferential surface portion which faces the plurality of wing portions that are folded has a region in which tip portions are not in contact with the surface of the balloon or with other elongate bodies, and a surface which faces the plurality of wing portions that are folded which faces an outer circumferential side has a region in which the tip portions are in contact with the surface of the balloon or with the other elongate bodies.

A balloon wrapping apparatus for folding a balloon at a distal portion of an elongated shaft includes: a pleating section that forms the balloon with pleats; a folding section that folds the pleats formed in the balloon, along a circumferential direction; and a support base that supports the shaft and can be moved toward and away from the pleating section. The pleating section includes an insertion hole through which the balloon can be inserted, and a back surface hole provided in a back surface on the side opposite to the side on which the insertion hole is provided. The pleating section includes an assisting shaft which can be inserted into the back surface hole from the rear surface side, and an interlock portion interlocking the assisting shaft with the support base. The assisting shaft is formed with a cavity portion.

A balloon wrapping apparatus and a balloon wrapping method are disclosed by which a balloon can be wrapped appropriately. The balloon wrapping apparatus for wrapping a balloon of a balloon catheter provided with the balloon at a distal portion of an elongated shaft includes: a pleating section that forms the balloon with wing shapes projecting in radial directions; a folding section that includes a plurality of blades aligned in a circumferential direction, and that folds the wing shapes formed in the balloon along the circumferential direction by moving rotationally the blades; and a rotational support portion that supports a portion of the shaft which portion is on a proximal side of the balloon, and that rotates the shaft in a direction opposite to a rotary movement direction of the blades in a state in which the balloon is positioned in relation to the folding section.

A balloon wrapping apparatus is disclosed by which a balloon can be accurately positioned and inserted in relation to a pleating section. The balloon wrapping apparatus for wrapping a balloon provided at a distal portion of an elongated shaft includes: a pleating section that forms the balloon with wing shapes; a folding section that folds the wing shapes formed in the balloon along a circumferential direction; a support base that supports a portion other than the distal portion of the shaft, and that makes the distal portion of the shaft insertable into the pleating section and the folding section; and a core metal member to be inserted in the shaft. The core metal member is inserted in the shaft from a distal end position of the balloon to at least the proximal side of a proximal end position of the balloon.
