The present invention relates to a cartoning machine in which box-like (i.e., generally rectangular) contents with a carton positioned therearound are fed, and when the box-like contents with the carton have passed a pivotable face of a conveyance pocket positioned on the most upstream side in the conveyance direction, a fold-down piece operates to fold down an upper body flap of the carton. After this operation, the pivotable face is raised from a lower position to fold up a lower body flap, whereby the lower body flap is overlapped on the outside of the upper body flap to complete the body folding of the carton. Thereafter, a plurality of conveyance pockets are conveyed simultaneously by intermittent operation of endless flexible members, whereby side flaps of each carton, which has gone through the body flap folding operation, are folded in successively to complete the cartoning.

Cartoning machine

A packaging device wherein a thermoplastic packaging sheet is supplied to a peripheral part of a pocket opening of a winding wheel while a box-like item, transported into the pocket, is continuously transferred, the item being transported out of the pocket and delivered whereby the sheet is wound in a U-shape along the surface of the item, and both free ends of the sheet are folded, along the surface of the item while the item is continuously transferred, and then overlapped to thermally adhere to each other, wherein an applying wheel continuously rotating synchronously in a direction opposite to that of the winding wheel, is disposed on a downstream side of the winding wheel with each of the outer circumferences of the winding wheel and the applying wheel being provided with a plurality of pockets having the items transported therein, the winding and applying wheels, being equally spaced apart in a rotational direction and being continuously oppositely rotated in a synchronous manner, with both pockets being kept on a linear line over a predetermined segment across a delivery position where the pockets in the winding wheel and the applying wheel are opposite to each other in a linear line with pushers being utilized for pushing the items in the winding wheel pockets the applying wheel pocket, a sheet supplying mechanism supplying the sheet to the winding wheel outer circumference and a holding mechanism for temporarily holding the sheet around the opening of the winding wheel pocket.

Packaging device

Apparatus for splicing a replacement web to a moving web comprises a guide for guiding the moving web along a predetermined path. A cutter severs a portion of the replacement web to establish the leading edge thereof; and a splicing station is positioned in the path of movement of the moving web for splicing the leading edge of the replacement web to the moving web while the latter is moving. The splicing station, which is constructed and arranged to establish a lap joint between the leading edge of the replacement web and the moving web, comprises a delivery device that includes a splice strip having adhesive on one surface, a device for positioning the strip in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the moving web, and a device for moving the replacement web in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the strip and into engagement with the adhesive surface of the strip in such a way that about half the width of the strip is covered by the leading edge of the replacement web which adheres to the strip, and the other half of the strip is uncovered exposing the adhesive. Finally, a device is provided for moving the strip and the replacement web adhered thereto relative to the moving web such that the exposed adhesive on the surface of the strip engages the moving web which is thereby adhered to the strip.

Apparatus for splicing a replacement web to a moving web

Articles are supplied to a conveyor by feeding primary articles from a primary supply, seriatim, to a conveyor. The conveyor is driven at a first speed consistent with the supply of primary articles so that primary articles are uniformly spaced on said conveyor. The presence of a predetermined number of supplemental articles in a supplemental supply is detected, and used to increase the speed of the conveyor to produce space on the conveyor sufficient to receive the predetermined number of supplemental articles. The predetermined number of supplemental articles are fed, seriatim, to the conveyor such that the supplemental articles are uniformly spaced on the conveyor with the same spacing that the primary articles on the conveyor.
