A first linearly polarized bundle of rays of incident rays is converted by optical modulation with an input video signal into a second linearly polarized bundle of rays orthogonal to the first rays in polarization. The first rays pass through a polarizer before optically modulated. A second linearly polarized bundle of rays originally involved in the incident rays is reflected by the polarizer in a first direction. The second rays obtained by the optical modulation are reflected by the polarizer in a second direction. The second rays reflected in the second direction pass through another polarizer. A first linearly polarized bundle of rays involved in the reflected second rays is reflected by the other polarizer. The reflected first rays is detected by an optical sensor that is positioned outside an optical path of the second rays originally involved in the incident rays and reflected in the first direction.

Light modulator, projection display apparatus and image projection method

A projection type display device is provided to display high quality images. In the device, a WB-PBSWis inclined to liquid crystal display devicesand has wire gridsparallel with a first substrate. One of directions of projection lines obtained by projecting the wire gridson a second substratevertically, the one direction being directed to a direction where one extension surface of the polarization spectroscopic surface intersects with another extension surface of the second substrate when the one direction is turned in the counterclockwise direction by 90&#xb0;, is defined as X-axis. If the liquid crystal display devicesare a type of first twist (normal twist), device reference line vectors are located at 225&#xb0;&#xb1;10&#xb0; in the counterclockwise direction in view from the first substrate. In case of a second twist (reverse twist) type, the device reference line vectors are located at 315&#xb0;&#xb1;10&#xb0; in the counterclockwise direction in view from the first substrate

Projection type display device

An image displaying apparatus employs quartz wave plates and displays images of high contrast. The quartz wave plates in the image displaying apparatus are each arranged between a polarizing beam splitter of a color separating-combining unit and a reflective spatial light modulator. Each of the quartz wave plates is made of two elementary quartz plates. An angle formed between slow axes of the two elemental quartz plates is within a range of 5 minutes to 15 minutes from a right angle.

Image displaying apparatus

A color separating/light guiding optics comprises two independent dichroic mirrors, reflection mirrors and correcting lenses. A horizontal plane region occupied by these optical components is entirely involved in a horizontal plane region occupied by a light modulating/color compositing/image projecting optics. A red beam is guided along a detoured optical path extending across a dead space below a projection lens. Although the optical path length of the red beam becomes longer than those of the blue beam and the green beam, the detoured optical path provides a sufficient space for installing the correcting lenses. The substantial optical path lengths of three primary color beams can be equalized with each other by the provision of these correcting lenses.

Projection-type display apparatus having polarized beam splitters and an illuminating device

A perpendicular magnetic recording medium comprises a recording medium base, a lower layer formed on the recording medium base, and an upper layer formed on the lower layer. The lower layer is made of a first material including cobalt, chromium and one or more elements other than cobalt and chromium. On the other hand, the upper layer is made of a second material including cobalt, chromium and one or more elements other than cobalt and chromium. A quantity of the one or more elements added to cobalt and chromium making up the second material is less than a quantity of the one or more elements added to cobalt and chromium making up the first material.

Perpendicular magnetic recording medium

A perpendicular magnetic recording medium comprises a recording medium base, a lower layer formed on the recording medium base, and an upper layer formed on the lower layer. The upper layer is made of cobalt-chromium, and the lower layer at least includes cobalt and chromium.

A perpendicular magnetic recording and reproducing system records and reproduces a signal on and from a perpendicular magnetic recording medium comprising a magnetic layer which is made from one magnetic material and is constituted by a layer having a low coercivity and a layer having a high coercivity on top of the layer having the low coercivity, by use of a ring core head and utilizes the layer having the low coercivity as a high permeability layer and the layer having the high coercivity as a perpendicular magnetization layer.

Perpendicular magnetic recording and reproducing system

A perpendicular magnetic recording medium comprises a recording medium base, a low coercivity layer formed on the recording medium base and having a low coercivity in an in-plane direction thereof, and a high coercivity layer formed on the low coercivity layer and having a high coercivity in a direction perpendicular to a surface of the low coercivity layer. The low coercivity layer and the high coercivity layer are formed from the same magnetic material and constitute a magnetic layer. A method of manufacturing this perpendicular magnetic recording medium comprises a single magnetic layer forming process of successively and continuously forming the low coercivity layer and the high coercivity layer on the recording medium base by using the same magnetic material as a depositing material.
