A herbicide comprising the sulfonylurea derivatives of the formula (I): ##STR1## wherein Q is --CH.dbd.CH-- or --S--, R is C.sub.1-3 alkyl, and X is --OCH.sub.3 or --CH.sub.3 ; or a salt thereof, are useful for the control of undesired vegetation, for example, black glass (Alopecurus myosuroides) or downy brome (Bromus tectorum L.) in the presence of many valuable small grain cereals such as wheat, barley, oats and rye. The herbicide is also unexpectedly tolerant to small grain cereals such as wheat, barley, oats and rye.

This invention relates to a process for producing a compound of the formula (I) as shown below. ##STR1## wherein Q is a condensed heterocyclic group having a nitrogen atom in the bridgehead position which may optionally be substituted, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each are an alkyl group, an alkoxy group or halogen and Z is CH or N, or a salt thereof. The compound (I) or a salt thereof is novel and of value as agricultural chemicals. Hexahydroisoindol derivatives, and their production and use

A novel hexahydroisoindole derivative of the formula, ##STR1## which can be produced by dehydration of the corresponding 3a-hydroxy-octahydroisioindole derivative or by reaction of the corresponding 3-chloro-hexahydroisoindole with a thiol sulfonate. The derivative is useful as an intermediate for producing a compound having a substituted or unsubstituted thiol group at 3-position and can be utilized as a herbicide possessing low toxicity to crops and animal.
