A liquid crystal display device includes: a TFT substrate formed with an alignment film on a pixel; a counter substrate disposed opposite to the TFT substrate and formed with an alignment film on a top surface on the TFT substrate side; and a liquid crystal sandwiched between the TFT substrate and the counter substrate. In the liquid crystal display device, the alignment film is configured of a first alignment film layer contacting the liquid crystal layer and having at least one kind of polyimide and a second alignment film layer formed below the first alignment film layer and having at least one kind of polyimide, the first alignment film layer is a material that is enabled to provide liquid crystal alignment regulating force by applying polarized light, and the first alignment film layer and the second alignment film layer contain a common polyimide structure.

Liquid crystal display device and manufacturing method thereof

In a liquid crystal display device having an alignment film subjected to an optical alignment process, the frame area can be reduced while maintaining the reliability of the sealing portion. To achieve this, in the display area, the alignment process is performed with UV light on the alignment film, to form an area in which the alignment film is not formed in the opposing first and second sides, and to form an area in which the amount of UV light irradiation on the alignment film is one fourth or less of the display area in the opposing third and fourth sides. In the first and second sides, the sealing material overlaps the area in which the alignment film is not formed. In the third and fourth sides, the sealing material overlaps the area in which the amount of UV light irradiation is one fourth or less of the display area.

Liquid crystal display device and manufacturing method of the same

The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device in which even in the case of using a photo-alignment technique, excellent afterimage characteristics can be stably obtained. Provided is a liquid crystal display device including a TFT substrate having an alignment film, an opposed substrate which is arranged to face the TFT substrate and on which an alignment film is formed, and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the alignment films, wherein the alignment films are materials that can provide a liquid crystal alignment restraining force by irradiating polarized light, and the ratio of oxygen atoms on the surface of the alignment film is higher than that in the alignment film.

To take measures against the phenomenon of difficulty for the orientation film material to flow into the through-hole when the diameter of through-holes which connects the pixel electrode and the source electrode becomes small. An interlayer insulating filmmade of SiN is formed on a counter electrode, and a pixel electrodehaving a slitis formed on the interlayer insulating film. A through-holewhich connects the pixel electrodeand the source electrode of a TFT has a large opening on the upper side, a small opening on the lower side, and an inner wall extending between the large opening and the small opening. The pixel electrodecovers the through-holeon an inner side of the pixel of the through-holebut does not cover a periphery of the large opening of the through-hole on an outer side of the through-hole. Consequently, an orientation film material can easily flow from a starting point given by an end portion of the pixel electrode into the inside of the through-hole.

Liquid crystal display device

A TFT substrate and a counter substrate are bonded via a seal material. Alignment films are applied to entire surfaces of the TFT substrate and the counter substrate so as to realize even thickness of the alignment film. This allows a display region to be formed up to the area around the seal material. The alignment film is photo-alignment processed. An organic film formed of the material which is not photo-aligned is interposed between the alignment film and the seal material. High bonding strength between the organic film and the seal material improves reliability of a seal portion as well as reduces a frame region.

A display device includes a first substrate having a plurality of TFTs, a passivation film, and a plurality of pixel electrodes, and a second substrate arranged with a gap with the first substrate. The passivation film has a plurality of contact holes, and the plurality of pixel electrodes are connected to the plurality of TFTs via the plurality of contact holes. The second substrate has a plurality of columnar spacers for ensuring the gap with the first substrate, and a plurality of columnar projections for misalignment prevention formed at positions corresponding to the contact holes. The number of the plurality of columnar projections is less than the number of the plurality of columnar spacers.

A liquid crystal display device includes first and second substrates, at least one of which is transparent, a liquid crystal layer which is disposed between the first and second substrates, a pixel electrode and a common electrode which are formed on one of the first and second substrates and which apply an electric field to the liquid crystal layer, a plurality of active elements which is connected to the pixel electrode and the common electrode, an alignment film which is disposed on at least one of the first and second substrates and has one surface contacting the liquid crystal layer, and an underlying layer which is disposed on at least one of the first and second substrates and contacts the other surface of the alignment film. The pixel electrode is laminated on the common electrode having a plane shape through an isolation film.

Disclosed is a liquid crystal display device including: a first substrate and a second substrate, one of which is transparent; a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate; a group of electrodes for applying an electric field to the liquid crystal layer, which is formed on one of the first substrate and the second substrate; a plurality of active elements connected to the group of electrodes; and an alignment film disposed on one of the first substrate and the second substrate, wherein the alignment film contains a polyimide and a precursor of the polyimide, each of which is formed from a diamine and an acid anhydride, and the diamine contains a first diamine having an acidic group and a second diamine having a nitrogen atom-containing functional group other than two amino groups.

Alignment film, composition for forming alignment film and liquid crystal display device

In a liquid crystal display device, a TFT substrate retains a contact hole that is formed in a passivation film, and is for connecting the TFT and the pixel electrode. And an opposite substrate retains a columnar spacer for ensuring a cell gap, and a columnar projection for misalignment prevention formed at a position corresponding to a position of the contact hole. Accordingly, misalignment between the TFT substrate and the opposite substrate is suppressed, occurrence of uneven brightness due to misalignment between pixel regions and a bright spot caused by shaving of an orientation film is prevented, and a favorable image is obtained.

Provided is a liquid crystal display device having a structure in which one surface of the alignment film contacts a liquid crystal layer, the other surface of the alignment film contacts an underlying layer, the refractive index of the alignment film monotonically increases in a film thickness direction of the alignment film from a boundary surface between the liquid crystal layer and the alignment film to a boundary surface between the underlying layer and the alignment film, and the minimum refractive index nof the liquid crystal layer, the refractive index nof the alignment film at the boundary surface between the liquid crystal layer and the alignment film, the refractive index nof the alignment film at the boundary surface between the alignment film and the underlying layer, and the refractive index nof the underlying layer have a relationship of an equation (I) in which n&#x2266;n&#x3c;n&#x2266;n.
