A method of producing a valve lifter to be used in a valve operating mechanism of an automotive vehicle. The valve lifter includes a skirt section, a crown section formed one end of the skirt section so that a cam of a camshaft is slidably contactable with the crown section, and a contacting section formed at an inside surface of the crown section and contactable with a valve stem of an engine valve. The production method comprises the following steps in the sequence set forth: (a) cold-forging a base material to form a valve lifter-shaped base material; (b) cold-pressing the base material to shape the valve lifter-shaped base material; (c) grinding an outer surface of the valve lifter-shaped base material to trim an outer shape of the valve-lifter-shaped base material; (d) totally machining the outer surface and an inner surface of the valve-shaped base material to adjust dimensions of parts of the valve lifter-shaped base material; (e) heat-treating only a part of the valve lifter-shaped base material, corresponding to the contacting section, to increase a hardness of the contacting section; and (f) grinding the contacting section to finish the contacting section.

Method of producing valve lifter

A valve lifter has a lifter body with a first surface arranged to feet on a pair of low lift cams on a camshaft, and a pair of hydraulic slides disposed in a bore of the lifter body. The slides have a stored position wherein they define therebetween and within the bore a chamber arranged to allow entry of a high lift cam on the camshaft disposed between the pair of low lift cams. The lifter body is formed with a window opening to the chamber to allow access of the high lift cam to the chamber. The slides have an operative position wherein they define a second surface opposite to the window arranged to rest on the high lift cam.

Valve lifter

An intake- and/or exhaust-valve timing control system for internal combustion engines in which a ring gear mechanism is provided between a timing pulley and a cam shaft for adjusting the phase angle between the pulley and the cam shaft. A drive mechanism is also provided for driving the ring gear mechanism depending upon the operating state of the engine. The drive mechanism includes a hydraulic circuit having oil supply and exhaust passages, a flow control valve having a spool valve for controlling the amount of working fluid flowing through the hydraulic circuit, a controller for monitoring the operating state of the engine, and an electromagnetic actuator having a plunger rod for actuating the flow control valve in response to the control signal from the controller. The flow control valve and the actuator are integrally mounted in the cylinder head. Therefore, relative friction between the facing ends of the spool valve and the plunger rod is avoided.
