The object is to provide a display device with a superior viewing angle. The display device includes a display portion, a liquid-crystal barrier portion, first to third polarizing layers, and at least one viewing-angle compensation layer. The liquid-crystal barrier portion is disposed on one side of the display portion, and adjusts an intensity of light of the display portion. The first polarizing layer is disposed opposite to the liquid-crystal barrier portion relative to the display portion. The second polarizing layer is interposed between the display portion and the liquid-crystal barrier portion. The third polarizing layer is disposed opposite to the display portion relative to the liquid-crystal barrier portion. The viewing-angle compensation layer is interposed between the liquid-crystal barrier portion and the third polarizing layer, and no viewing-angle compensation layer is interposed between the second polarizing layer and the liquid-crystal barrier portion.

Display device

A liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal panel, a transparent protective member, and a transparent adhesive material. The liquid crystal panel is an in-plane switching liquid crystal panel including a TFT substrate, a counter substrate sandwiching a liquid crystal layer between the counter substrate and the TFT substrate, and a transparent conductive film being provided on a surface opposite to the liquid crystal layer of the counter substrate, a side of the transparent conductive film being a side of a display surface. The transparent protective member covers a surface on the side of the display surface of the liquid crystal panel. The transparent adhesive material attaches the transparent protective member on the surface on the side of the display surface. The transparent conductive film has a film thickness ranging from 120 nm to 160 nm.

Liquid crystal display device

A display panel includes sub-pixel pairs arranged laterally at a predetermined pitch, the sub-pixel pair including two sub pixels displaying images for right and left eyes respectively. A parallax-barrier shutter panel includes sub apertures switching light-transmitting and light-blocking states by driving a liquid crystal layer held between two transparent substrates with transparent electrodes extending vertically. The sub apertures are arranged laterally at a pitch obtained by dividing a reference parallax-barrier pitch by N (N being an even number equal to or greater than four), the reference parallax-barrier pitch being determined on the basis of a predetermined design observation distance and the pitch of the sub-pixel pairs. The parallax-barrier shutter panel includes common driving areas obtained by dividing a display area laterally. (N&#xb7;M+N/2) pieces of the transparent electrodes (M being a positive integer) arranged in the common driving are connected with every N-th one of the transparent electrodes.

Stereoscopic image display apparatus, and drive method therefor

A liquid crystal display device of a horizontal electric field type includes: a first electrode and a second electrode formed on a liquid-crystal-side surface of the first transparent substrate, and two polarization plates respectively adhered such that respective transmission axes thereof are orthogonal to each other, wherein the liquid crystal material is rotated by an electric field generated between the first electrode and the second electrode. With respect to the transmission axis located in an extending direction between the first electrode and the second electrode, an initial orientation direction of the liquid crystal material is within a range between a direction rotated by 0.5-degree in an opposite response direction of the liquid crystal material and a direction orthogonal to an electric field direction generated between the first electrode and the second electrode.

The display device includes a display panel on which sub-pixel pairs are arranged in a lateral direction, and a parallax barrier shutter panel on which sub-openings that can be changed between a light transmittance state and a light-shielding state are arranged in a lateral direction. Arbitrary allocated number of adjacent sub-openings among the plural sub-openings belonging to a reference parallax barrier pitch are put into a light transmittance state, and the remaining sub-openings are put into a light-shielding state, so that a general opening is formed on the parallax barrier shutter panel. A sub-opening pitch of the sub-opening on the boundary part between the adjacent common driving areas is different from the sub-opening pitch of the other sub-openings.

A liquid crystal display according to the present invention is of the lateral electric field type and includes an array substrate having a plurality of pixels arranged in a matrix state, a counter substrate disposed opposite to the array substrate, and liquid crystal enclosed between the array substrate and the counter substrate by a sealing material. The liquid crystal display has a display area for an image and a frame area surrounding the display area. The liquid crystal display further includes an inspection circuit or a protection circuit disposed in the frame area of the array substrate, and a counter electrode disposed in the frame area of the counter substrate and overlapped with entirety of the inspection circuit or the protection circuit in a planar view. The counter electrode is equal in electric potential to a common electrode of the array substrate.

Liquid crystal display

A first polarizing plate is disposed on a first main surface of a liquid crystal display panel. A second polarizing plate is disposed on a second main surface of the liquid crystal panel. The first polarizing plate includes a first polarizer and a first phase difference film laminated on a main surface on the liquid crystal display panel side in the first polarizer. The second polarizing plate includes a second polarizer and a transparent film laminated on a main surface on the side opposite to the liquid crystal display panel in the second polarizer.

A display panel has a first viewing-angle characteristic for a first yellow-shift direction that is an oblique visual-field direction in which an image shifts to yellow in white display and for a first blue-shift direction that is a visual field direction in which an image shifts to blue in white display. A parallax barrier panel has a second viewing-angle characteristic for a second yellow-shift direction that is an oblique visual-field direction in which an image shifts to yellow in white display and for a second blue-shift direction that is a visual field direction in which an image shifts to blue in white display. The display panel and the parallax barrier panel are laminated such that the first yellow-shift direction and the second blue-shift direction agree with each other and that the first blue-shift direction and the second yellow-shift direction agree with each other.

A one-pixel structure of a display panel included in an auto-stereoscopic image display device adopts an in-plane switching mode. Transparent counter electrodes that are not provided in a liquid crystal panel of a normal in-plane switching mode are formed correspondingly to pixel peripheral regions on a second transparent substrate side and, in 3-dimensional image display, a vertical electric field is forcibly generated between the transparent counter electrodes and the comb-shaped electrodes, which causes the liquid crystal molecules to rise to show black display in the pixel peripheral regions. In 2-dimensional image display, meanwhile, the transparent counter electrodes are set to be floating, and the display panel is caused to have a structure substantially equivalent to a structure in which the transparent counter electrodes are not provided, to thereby make the display in pixel peripheral regions identical to the display (brightness) in a pixel main region.

A liquid crystal display includes a liquid crystal display panel. The liquid crystal display panel includes a substrate and a substrate which are disposed opposite to each other, columnar spacers which are disposed on a surface of the substrate, and a liquid crystal layer filled between the substrates. A peripheral edge part of a display region has a dual PS structure in which the columnar spacer and the columnar spacer are disposed. A central part of the display region has any of a main PS structure in which only the columnar spacer is disposed, a sub PS structure in which only the columnar spacer is disposed, and the dual PS structure.

An In Plane Switching (IPS) liquid crystal displaying apparatus includes a TFT array substrate, an opposite substrate opposed to the TFT array substrate and a liquid crystal interposed between the TFT array substrate and the opposite substrate. The TFT array substrate includes a plurality of driving electrodes formed on a passivation film and connected with the plurality of TFTs, a plurality of opposite electrodes formed on the passivation film, each of the plurality of opposite electrodes opposing the respective plurality of driving electrodes, and a plurality of common lines configured to connect each of the plurality of opposite electrodes with each of a plurality of pixels. The TFT array substrate provided with a light shielding formed in such a manner as to superpose one signal line of the plurality of signal lines and one opposite electrode of the plurality of opposite electrodes.

In plane switching liquid crystal displaying apparatus for improved luminance including a thin film transistor array substrate

A liquid crystal display device comprising a sealing material provided on a periphery of a substrate, projections formed by etching a film formed on the subtrate, and another substrate opposite the substrate being remote therefrom by a gap and being supported by the projections. An area occupying rate of the projections portions with respect to a region enclosed by the sealing material is not less than 0.0001 and not more than 0.003. It is possible to obtain a liquid crystal display device free of display blurs at the time of using the same in a high temperature condition and with which no bubbles are generated when using the same in a low temperature condition by setting the area occupying ratio for the columnar spacers to be optimal value.

Liquid crystal display device and method for manufacturing the same

An IPS liquid crystal displaying apparatus includes: a TFT array substrate, an opposite substrate opposed to the TFT array substrate and liquid crystal interposed between the TFT array substrate and the opposite substrate, wherein the TFT array substrate is composed of a glass substrate, a gate insulating film formed on the glass substrate, a possivation film formed on the gate insulating film, a plurality of scanning lines for transmitting a scanning signal, a plurality of signal lines for transmitting an image signal, a plurality of pixels arranged in grid like pattern by crossing the plurality of scanning lines with the plurality of signal lines, a plurality of TFTs implementing switching operation of the image signal on the basis of the scanning signals, a plurality of driving electrodes connected with the TFT, a plurality of opposite electrodes arranged in such a manner that each of the plurality of opposite electrodes is opposed to each of the driving electrodes, and a plurality of common lines for mutually connecting each of the opposite electrode of one of the plurality of pixels with the other one of the plurality of pixels, wherein the TFT array substrate is formed on the passivation film, the passivation film being different from a layer provided with the driving electrode and the opposite electrode.
