This invention provides a hydraulic composition which contains a cementitious material in powder form, .beta.-1,3-glucan, and a superplasticizer. The composition makes it possible to prepare concrete with high resistance to segregation, high fluidity, and excellent filling ability. Because of this, vibration of the concrete is not necessary during casting; it can simply be poured.

A concrete structural member of improved stability is produced by preparing a concrete composite layer having a concrete layer on one side and an aggregate layer on the other side thereof, impregnating the composite layer with a monomer, thermally or catalytically polymerizing the monomer impregnated in the composite layer, and thereafter placing fresh concrete on the aggregate layer side of the polymer-impregnated composite layer.

Concrete structural member and method for manufacture thereof

In the preparation of a cement paste about 30 to 76% of the total water is added to the cement to form a funicular state, capillary state or slurry state, and the resulting mixture is kneaded so as to reduce the coagulated lumps of cement. Then the remaining quantity of water is added and the composition or mixture is kneaded again. Sand and/or gravel may be incorporated after the firstly kneaded mixture. The resulting cement paste, mortar or green concrete exhibits a small percentage of bleeding water and products prepared therefrom have a high compression strength.
