The invention relates to a method of preparing 2-chloro-pyridinemethanol represented by the following formula (1). The method includes the steps of: (a) reacting 2-chloro-monochloromethylpyridine with an alkali metal salt of a carboxylic acid and/or a hydrate of the alkali metal salt so as to form an ester derivative; and (b) hydrolyzing the ester derivative so as to form the 2-chloro-pyridinemethanol. ##STR1##

The present invention relates to phthalimide compounds represented by the following general formula (I) and their acid-added salts and to methods of producing the same: ##STR1## wherein Y represents --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 -- or --CH.dbd.CH--. The present invention provides phthalimide compounds represented by the above general formula (I) and their acid-added salts, which are useful compounds as intermediates of medicines such as anti-ulcers based on histamine H.sub.2 receptor antagonism. In particular, acid-added salts of the phthalimide compounds can be easily refined by the recrystallization method. Therefore, there is provided an advantage that purity of the anti-ulcers which are derived from phthalimide compounds and their acid-added salts according to the present invention can be improved.

The invention relates to a method of chlorinating a side chain methyl group of 2-chloro-methylpyridine. The method comprising the steps of:(a) reacting said 2-chloro-methylpyridine with chlorine radical so that hydrogen chloride and/or hydrochloride of 2-chloro-methylpyridine are formed; and (b) neutralizing said hydrogen chloride and/or said hydrochloride of said 2-chloro-methyl-pyridine with a basic solution so as to chlorinating a side chain methyl group of said 2-chloro-methylpyridine.

Two kinds of novel fluorobenzophenones represented by the general formula (A), wherein X is F or Cl, are synthesized from 1,2-difluorobenzene and 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone, respectively. Novel fluorophenyl fluorobenzoates represented by the general formula (B), wherein X is F or Cl, are obtained by oxidizing the fluorobenzophenones (A), respectively, in an organic solvent by using trifluoroacetic acid and aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide.
