A medium writing apparatus obtains information to be written onto a recording medium, converts the information into a suitable writable format, and then writes the converted information onto the recording medium. An ID obtaining section obtains a medium ID from the recording medium, or through an input by the user. The medium ID and information indicating the place of the written information are sent to a server, and then stored as index information correlating them with each other. When the information written onto the recording medium is to be used at a later timing, the medium ID is identified, and the index information is obtained from the server. Therefore, the original information can be obtained so as to be easily reprocessed or reused.

The present invention provides stock solutions for production of nonlinear-optical materials using a wet coating method. In particular, the invention provides a stock solution containing a nonlinear-optically active organic compound, which is a push-pull &#x3c0;-conjugated compound having a particular chemical structure, having one or more cross-linkable functional groups. In addition, the invention provides a stock solution comprising a nonlinear-optically active organic compound having at least a certain chemical structure and a matrix-forming compound having one or more cross-linkable functional groups. The present invention provides an organic nonlinear optical material including an organic compound having nonlinear optical activity dispersed in or bonded to a polymer binder, wherein the material contains a tertiary amine derivative represented by the following formula (1) as the organic compound having nonlinear optical activity, and an organic nonlinear optical element using the same.  In the formula, Zto Zare independently aromatic groups optionally having a substituent; L is a &#x3c0; conjugated group optionally having a substituent; A is a &#x3c0; conjugated electron-attractive group which includes a ring structure optionally having a substituent; m denotes 0 or 1; a &#x3c0; conjugated system denoted by Z-Lhas, from one terminal thereof to the other terminal, five or more unsaturated bonds which form one conjugated system; and at least two of Zto Z, L and A may be connected so as to form at least one ring structure.

Organic nonlinear optical material and nonlinear optical element using the same

An optical storage medium of the present invention enables storage of data with high precision at high speed, and rewriting of data at high speed without an erasing process. Optical storage, reading and retrieving methods and optical storage, reading, and retrieving apparatuses using the medium are also provided. The optical storage medium has at least a polarization-sensitive member having the photo-induced birefringence property, such as a member made of polyester polymer having cyanoazobenzene as a side chain. The above apparatuses have spatial light modulator capable of modulating polarization. The modulator provides information of bit of two-dimensional data to each corresponding pixel by application or non-application of a voltage, and modulates the polarization of the beam incident on each pixel. Thereby, a signal beam transmitted through the spatial light modulator having a spatial polarization modulation corresponding to the two-dimensional data is obtained. The signal beam illuminates the optical storage medium, and at the same time, a reference beam illuminates the same region in the medium where the signal beam illuminates. Thus a hologram of the polarization modulation of the signal beam corresponding to the two-dimensional data is stored in the optical storage medium.

An electrodepositing solution for low-potential electrodeposition is disclosed which is used in an electrodeposition method and a photoelectrodeposition method and which can improve the film formability under the application of a low voltage, suppress the elution of metal ions and stably form by deposition an electrodeposition film having a uniform thickness, a uniform color density and a smooth surface. The electrodepositing solution permits an electrodeposition film of an electrodeposition material to be formed by deposition on a conductive material upon application of a voltage between the conductive material and a counter electrode. The electrodeposition material contains an electropositive polymer material which contains, as at least one component thereof, a copolymer consisting of a hydrophobic monomer, a hydrophilic monomer and a plastic monomer.

An optical filtering apparatus and method, wherein at least one polarizer is located in the path of radiation passing through a birefringent medium. The invention can be used to process complementary bands of spatial frequency spectra. The invention can be practiced using a polarizing beam splitter. The invention can also be practiced using an optical storage layer forming part of the birefringent medium.

A method of providing a polymeric film with optical anisotropy by applying a polarized light to a polymeric film is disclosed. In the method, a photoisomerizable group or a photoisomerizable molecule has a T (thermal) type photochromic property capable of being isomerized by a thermal back reaction after the isomerization by light. The method includes two successive steps, that is, a step of applying a polarized light to the polymeric film and a step of shutting off a polarized light and leaving the film as it is, and controls the temperature of the polymeric film for enhancing the orientation of the photoisomerizable group or the photoisomerizable molecule induced by the thermal back reaction. An apparatus for practicing the method and an optical anisotropic medium having the polymeric film with high optical anisotropy obtained by the method are also provided.

A method and an apparatus capable of filtering based on desired spatial frequency characteristics without loss of Fourier spectrum frequency components, and of matched filtering of high recognition capability without losing functions of data recording and reconstruction as well as high-speed transmission and retrieval features and mass storage capacity characteristic of a holographic memory. Fourier transformed object light with 0&deg; polarization of a target image is stored as a hologram using reference light having a spatial polarization distribution such that a daughter wavelet on scale m has 90&deg; polarization. The hologram is retrieved using the Fourier transformed object light with 0&deg; polarization. The hologram yields diffracted light in the form of a spatial frequency component which corresponds to scale m and is polarized 90&deg; with respect to the other spatial frequency components. A polarizing element is used to extract only the spatial frequency component corresponding to scale m. Given reference light having a spatial polarization distribution in conformity with a shape of a spatial frequency filter, retrieval light of 0&deg; polarization is applied for low-pass and high-pass filtering upon reconstruction.
