In an escalator having a high-speed inclined portion, shape of an auxiliary track in a speed-changing region for steps is determined by finding a positional relationship between step link roller shafts of at least one of the steps and an adjacent step from a step speed profile representing speed of the step link roller shafts as a function of time. The shape of a riser is determined such that the riser aligns with a relative movement locus of the adjacent step by finding a relative positional relationship between the step and the adjacent step from the step speed profile.

In a control apparatus for a passenger conveyor, passenger detecting devices provided on balustrades distinguish and monitor the absence/presence of a passenger within first zones on an entrance gate side and an exit gate side including floor boards of the entrance gate side and the exit gate side, and the absence/presence of a passenger within second zones on the entrance gate side and the exit gate side adjacent to and beyond the first zones, covering the first zones. When a passenger is detected in the second zone on the entrance gate side in a standby mode, a mode switching circuit switches the operating mode to an intermediate mode, and when a passenger is detected in the first zone on the entrance gate side in the intermediate mode, the mode switching circuit switches the operating mode to a conveying mode.

A tread unit of a passenger conveyor includes: a tread, a tread reinforcing member and a riser which are made of fiber reinforced plastic made by knitting fibers together. The surfaces of the cleat portions of the tread and the riser are provided with surface treated layers in which the wear resistance and coefficient of friction are controlled. As a result of this construction, the aesthetic design of the tread unit and of the passenger conveyor system can be improved. In addition, the reduced weight of the tread unit contributes to labor-saving at the time of mounting, and a passenger conveyor system using these tread units can be reduced in size and weight as a whole.

An escalator system with wheel chair steps comprising a main frame having an upper end and a lower end, a plurality of steps connected in an endless conveyor loop and capable of circulating along the main frame, and an operating mechanism disposed at a position close to the ends of the main frame. The escalator system further comprises a first wheel chair step disposed between the steps and having a connection arm capable of being displaced toward the lower end of the main frame by a shifter mechanism engageable with the operating mechanism when necessary. The escalator system also comprises a second wheel chair step disposed between the steps and having a rising tread board capable of being raised by a raising mechanism engageable with the operating mechanisms when necessary and a boarding plate capable of being displaced toward the lower end of the main frame by a shifter mechanism engageable with the operating mechanism when necessary. The rising tread board, when raised, is supported by the connection arm displaced in a projected position and defines a combined and enlarged horizontal surface together with the tread board of the first wheel chair step.

An escalator system comprising a main frame (1) defining a circulating loop path (2) therein, a plurality of steps (3,4,5,6) connected in an endless step loop disposed in the loop path and a special convertible step unit (4,5,6) disposed in the step loop and having a movable member (4a,11). The special step unit defines at least one of the steps with the movable member in an ordinary position in an ordinary operating mode, and the step unit defining a special step having a broad tread surface with the movable member displaced in a broad step position in a special operating mode. A displacement mechanism (45,46,13) having one end engageable with the special step unit (7) is disposed for displacing the movable member of the special step unit between the ordinary position and the broad step position by a drive force of the step loop which is a drive force component in the direction of width of the step. The other end of the displacement mechanism is engageable with a guide rail (27) only in the special operating mode for moving the displacement mechanism in the step width direction by a camming action of the guide rail.
