It is one objective of the present invention to provide an image forming apparatus that increases the printing stability for a highlighted portion, and that can form a high quality image without causing a barrier due to the application of excessive energy to a shadow portion. In an image forming apparatus that, when gray level image data are input, divides the data into a plurality of blocks and, for gray level recording, converts the gray level image data into multi-valued data, in accordance with a gray level transformation characteristic determined in accordance with relative pixel positions in each of the blocks, the gray level transformation characteristic is so set that B<0.85A is established, wherein A denotes a maximum value for multi-valued data when the printing density of the gray level image data is equal to or lower than a half tone, and B denotes a minimum value for an envelope that is obtained by coupling extrema of multi-valued data, relative to transform property curves for the printing density, that are equal to or higher than the half tone.

A reproduced still picture having a comparatively high picture quality is obtained irrespective of the luminance of the subject. In an interval photography mode, photography is performed one time in a plurality of fields at a relatively high shutter speed of 1/250 of a second to obtained a first video signal, and photography is performed at an ordinary shutter speed of 1/60 of a second in other fields to obtain a second video signal. These video signals are amplified at mutually different first and second amplification factors (6 dB and 18.4 dB, respectively) in conformity with the shutter speed, by an AGC. The first and second amplification factors are varied in dependence upon the illumination of the subject in such a manner that the average levels of the first and second video signals are maintained at a fixed level.

Video signals include a first video signal and a second video signal. The second video signal, which represents an image of a subject photographed at a relatively high shutter speed, is inserted in a prescribed plurality of frames of the first video signal representing the image of the subject photographed at an ordinary shutter speed. The first video signal has a print inhibit signal, which inhibits printing of an image represented by the video signal, superposed thereon in a vertical blanking interval. The video signal which does not contain the print inhibit signal in its vertical blanking interval, is stored in a memory. The stored video signal is read out of the memory to be used for printing.

A half tone color image recording method is provided in which picture cells of a same main scanning line are staggered such that every second picture cell is shifted in a sub scan direction orthogonal to the main scan direction in one or two of three colors. Simultaneously, in the other two colors or in a remaining one color, every second picture cell group consisting of two adjacent picture cells of the same main scanning line is shifted in the sub scan direction. The amount of staggering or shifting corresponds to a half length of the picture cells in the sub scan direction.

Color image recording method

A thermal head is moved in a sub scan direction relatively to a recording paper, the thermal head having a plurality of heating elements disposed along a main scan direction. The length of each heating element along the main scan direction is longer than its length along the sub scan direction. While the thermal head moves by a distance corresponding to the width of a picture cell, drive time of each heating element, in which each heating element is driven continuously or intermittently, is controlled to change the recording area of wax type ink dot transferred to the recording paper. Adjacent ink dots in the main scan direction are displaced by a predetermined distance in the sub scan direction. If a thermal head is intermittently moved by a unit movement amount, the unit movement amount is set smaller than the width of the heating element in order to achieve a high gradation. In printing a color image using at least three types of inks including cyan, magenta, and yellow, the recording positions of the color inks are displaced. In order to prevent hue change and color moire of an image, the picture cell density is set different in the sub scan direction at least between cyan and magenta.
