An IPS-mode transflective LCD device includes an array of pixels each including a reflective region and a transmissive region. The reflective region operates in a normally-white mode, and the transmissive region operates in a normally-black mode. A first potential is applied to a liquid crystal layer in the reflective region, and a second potential is applied to the liquid crystal layer in the transmissive region. The first and second potential have therebetween an opposite magnitude relationship in each of the pixels.

Methods for driving a transflective liquid crystal display device

An IPS-mode transflective LCD device includes an array of pixels each including a reflective region and a transmissive region. A first pixel electrode and a first common electrode are formed in the reflective region, and a second pixel electrode and a second common electrode are formed in the transmissive region. The first and second pixel electrodes receive a common pixel signal. The first common electrode receives a first common signal which is common among the reflective regions of a plurality of pixels, and the second common electrode receives a second common signal which is common among the transmissive regions of the plurality of pixels.

By using a photosensitive organic film, an uneven layer for forming a reflective electrode of a reflective region of a transflective liquid crystal display device and a protrusion for multi-division alignment of liquid crystals are concurrently formed. The heights of the uneven layer and of the protrusion are adjusted by using accumulated amounts of light to which the photosensitive organic film is exposed. The uneven layer can be used as an adjusting layer for adjusting the thickness of a liquid crystal layer.
