When a lower thread is effected with tension by an upper thread, a lower thread tension device is actuated in a certain working distance with very small resistance to an extent that a lower thread is drawn as if without resistance. If the lower thread is effected with said tension outside of said distance, it is not drawn out with large resistance. An actuation means successively receives information about thread consumed in each of the stitches and information about rotation phase of the sewing machine from a phase sensor. In the distance of a strong resistance, the lower thread is prohibited from drawing, and the thread is tightened in this distance.

A device for regulating upper thread tension in a sewing machine having an upper thread tension device with two discs receiving an upper thread therebetween, a spring pressing the discs one against the other, a presser body positioned between the spring and the discs, and a manually operated dial for actuating the presser body, the regulating device having an indicator for indicating a thread tension of a proper value and operatively connectable to the dial and movable thereby, in which a relation between a moving amount of the presser body and a moving amount of the indicator is regulated and a pressure of the thread tension is adjusted to the movement of the thread tension indicator.

In backward progress of straight stitching, stitches are conformed to either a perfect stitch or a hitch stitch without causing mixture of them, and while a needle is turned at a determined one of a right line or a left one from a basic line just before the needle drops on the basic line of a straight stitching, a condition of the thread to penetration of the needle is regulated before the needle dropping, whereby the stitch forming conditions are made uniform, so that satisfactory stitches are formed without requiring any special processes to the stitch forming mechanism members.

A control circuit is provided in an electronic sewing machine wherein a specific stitch pattern is selected from a plurality of stitch patterns stored in an electronic memory, by selection of a corresponding pattern number which is then indicated at a digital indicator arranged on a front panel of the machine housing. A possible incomplete or incorrect selection of a pattern number will cause the selected pattern number indicated at the digital indicator to blink, thus giving a cautionary notice to the machine operator and, at the same time, will cause the sewing machine to stop from further stitching operation.

A hand stitching presser foot, for a zigzag sewing machine having a fabric feed direction and a presser foot holder, for forming a hem on a fabric, the presser foot consisting of a fabric presser member pivotally mounted to the presser foot holder and having one end, an elastic fabric presser portion and a cutout having an open edge extending in the fabric feed direction, the cutout forming a needle drop hole on an edge of the cutout opposite from the open edge, a fabric guide member disposed a distance from the presser foot holder, fixed to the fabric presser member at one end and adjacent to the open edge, the fabric guide member forming a fabric guide portion having a vertical face disposed substantially along the fabric feed direction for guiding the fabric in the fabric feed direction, and a thread guide member having a thread guide portion fixed to the fabric guide member and arranged so as to extend across the cutout in the region of the open edge, the elastic fabric presser portion being located between the thread guide portion of the thread guide member and the needle drop hole of the fabric presser member, and being formed so as to press against the fabric being sewn.

A curved needle for use in medical operations includes a grip to be mounted in a suturing machine and a curved portion terminated with a needle eye for receivinga needle. On the outside of the curved portion an elongated groove is formed for guiding a thread toward the needle eye. The groove includes a partially closed portion for preventing the thread from slipping out from the groove.

Stitches have once been formed in a sewing machine in four steps to produce a buttonhole, the number of the stitches to be used in each of the steps are stored in a memory, and the stitches in each step are formed with the number of stored stitches for following buttonhole such that all sizes of the buttonholes are made of the same size. The sewing machine is provided with a central circuit which includes a pattern selecting device which selects a cam from a plurality of pattern cams in correspondence to stitching of the designated step in producing the buttonholes. An electronic control device provided in the sewing machine stores the number of stitches formed in accordance with each of the steps with the memory designation, and a stitching mode check device designates a subsequent step in each of the steps. An indicating device provided in the central circuit indicates this designation, and the buttonhole is repeatedly formed. A machine motor control circuit stops a machine motor at completion of the number of stitches stored in each step and the machine motor again starts with selection of new patterns of the stitches.

In a process of producing hemstitches by means of a zigzag sewing machine, in which straight stitches spaced from the edges of the fabrics to be sewn are formed, first zigzag stitches of a predetermined width are formed which extend between the edge of the fabrics and the straight stitches at a predetermined distance corresponding to the predetermined width of the zigzag stitches and secondly, zigzag stitches are formed which extend between the first zigzag stitches and the straight stitches. The second zigzag stitches formed are wider than the first zigzag stitches.

Zigzag hemstitch

A thread is passed through a dyeing apparatus before the thread is supplied to a sewing machine as an upper thread. The dyeing apparatus has a cylinder containing a plurality of coloring members, each coloring member containing a coloring liquid of a different color. The cylinder is rotated by a manually operated dial to select one of the coloring members in accordance with a stitch to be sewn with a sewing machine. A coloring section of the selected coloring member is exposed to the outside of the cylinder for establishing contact between the thread and the coloring section. A heat-set roller is adapted to come into contact with the thread for heat-setting the coloring liquid applied thereto. The contact between the thread and the coloring member and the heat-set roller is actuated in response to operation of the sewing machine.

Apparatus for dyeing sewing machine upper threads

A suturing instrument is used to form stitchings including stitching formation made by causing a shuttle thread to move in reciprocation on cut edges of a human part, between knottings and next knottings in a lock stitching, via an outer side of a needle thread at a needle-out-hole from a needle-in-hole of a needle, thereby to make conglutination of the cut part stable and sound. In a method of suturing cut edges of human parts in a surgical operation the shuttle thread crossed with the needle thread traverses over the cut edges from the needle-out-hole to the needle-in-hole of the next stitch and passes under the outside of the needle thread carried by the needle. The shuttle thread then again traverses over the cut edges to the needle-out-hole of the next stitch.

Stitching formation by a suturing instrument

A fabric presser foot containing a member for guiding the hem of a fabric and a thread guide member disposed externally to the hem guide member and parallel to the fabric feed direction. Hemming is accomplished with the presser foot by forming a series stitch and a stitch for the subsequent stitching cycle. The series stitch contains at least two stitches formed on the fabric. Also formed is a stitch at the fabric hem, and a stitch formed externally to the thread guide member which is disposed on the fabric presser foot. The presser foot is attached to the head of the zigzag sewing machine which forms lock stitches using an upper and lower thread.

A sewing machine having a drive shaft rotated by a machine motor to vertically reciprocate a needle carrying an upper thread is provided with a device for adjusting the tension of a lower thread pulled out from a bobbin located in a bobbin carrier of the sewing machine. The device includes a tension lever cooperated with a spring element, and a releasing lever which is in engagement with a cam rotated by the drive shaft. The position of the tension lever relative to the lower thread is effected by a manually operated dial and a cam engageable with the spring element. The releasing lever is adapted to intermittently release the tension lever from the lower thread during the stitching operation.

Sewing machine with bobbin thread tension adjusting device

An assembly for adjustment of lower thread tension for a sewing machine having a loop taker and a bobbin carrier which is held by the loop taker and carries a bobbin loaded with the lower thread. The assembly comprises a base plate and a resilient member, one end of which is connected to the base plate. A tension is given to the lower thread while the thread is passed between the base plate and the resilient member. A substantially L-shaped presser element having an upper vertical and a lower horizontal portion is provided for the assembly and is turnably attached to an inner wall of the bobbin carrier. The vertical portion of the presser element is adapted to press a free end of the resilient member against the base plate. A permanent magnet or electromagnet acts on the horizontal portion of the presser element without contact thereto. The magnet is manually operated from outside of the sewing machine to vary a magnetic force of the magnet against the horizontal portion of the presser element, upon which the presser element is turned to adjust the lower thread tension. The resilient member may be omitted and in this case the L-shaped presser element is designed to directly press the lower thread against the base plate.
