A sheet feeding mechanism includes a receiving member, a feed member for feeding sheets from a stack thereof on the receiving member, and an overlapping feed preventing device including a roller to be rotated in a predetermined direction and a friction member cooperating with the roller. In relation to the friction member, a device is provided for substantially preventing the leading end of a fed sheet from contacting that part of the friction member which is upstream, in the sheet feeding direction, of the nipping site between the friction member and the roller.

A copying apparatus capable of producing a copied image on both surfaces of a copying paper as required includes a copying paper receiving and delivering device capable of receiving a copying paper returned through a copying paper returning passage and delivering it to a copying paper conveying passage. The paper receiving and delivering device includes a copying paper receiving stand supporting member disposed within a housing of the apparatus and a copying paper receiving stand to be mounted detachably on the supporting member, and the paper returned through the paper returning passage is received on the paper receiving stand. Alternatively, the paper receiving and delivering member includes a copying paper receiving stand detachably mounted on the housing and at least partly projecting out of the housing, and the paper returned through the paper returning passage is received on the paper receiving stand. Furthermore, copying paper sheets can be loaded manually on the paper receiving stand from outside the housing.

An image forming apparatus is so arranged as to form an image of an original document on a photosensitive member by accommodating the plate-like photosensitive member of a rectangular or square configuration placed on an exposure section base in a housing of the image forming apparatus. The exposure section base is disengageable from the housing in a horizontal direction and has a plurality of suction holes in a region on which the photosensitive member is placed. A switch detects when the exposure section base is inserted into the housing to reach a predetermined position, and a suction device then sucks air through the suction holes.

A cutting apparatus for an electrostatic copying machine includes a fixed blade having a straight cutting edge, a rotary shaft mounted for rotation on the frame of the machine, and a rotary fixed to an carried by the rotary shaft, the rotary blade having a spirally curved cutting edge. A wrap spring clutch is capable of transmitting rotation of a continually rotating gear to the rotary shaft and rotary blade. The wrap spring clutch is prevented from operation by a control cog of a double cog member. An inclinable member operates the double cog member to release the wrap spring clutch to enable rotation of the rotary shaft and rotary blade. The double cog member has a rotation lock cog which stops the wrap spring clutch after a predetermined rotation of the rotary shaft and rotary blade.

A mechanism for supporting a cover lid, particularly an original document cover lid of an electrostatic copying apparatus, includes a generally U-shaped support member for supporting the cover lid. A pair of arms of the support member are fixed to a pair of hinge members which are mounted on the machine frame for rotation about an axis. Support pieces are fixed to the hinge members for rotation therewith about the axis. First springs are connected to the support pieces for urging the hinge members, the support member and the cover lid to rotate about the axis in a first direction toward an open position of the cover lid. A revolving plate is pivotally mounted on the machine frame, and a support bar is fixed to one of the hinge members and extends into an elongated opening of the revolving plate, such that rotation of the hinge members around the axis causes the support bar to pivot the revolving plate between first and second positions. An oscillating lever mounted on the machine frame has a projection fitting into the notch when the revolving plate is in the first position and the cover lid is in the open position, such that the projection maintains the cover lid in the open position. A second spring biases the projection against an arc-shaped surface of the revolving plate when the cover lid is moved from the open position toward a closed position thereof.

An electrostatic copying apparatus has a copying paper wound in a roll-like form, and an endless drive cable loop is wrapped about two drive reels rotated in one direction so as to cause part of an optical device or an original document carrier to travel reciprocally during a copying operation. Each copying operation mode, such as copying paper feeding, exposure, and copying paper cutting, is timed by means of mechanical constructions including a moving member to cause a paper feed detecting member, an exposure detecting member, a paper cut detecting member and a de-energization detecting member to pivot. These pivot motions result into a paper feed linkage actuation of a paper feed device, an exposure linkage energization of an exposure lamp, and a paper cut linkage actuation of a paper cut device.
