In an image display device having a frame rate converting (FRC) portion, it is possible to prevent image degradation of a combined image display portion such as an OSD and PinP attributed to the FRC process. The image display device includes: an FRC portionfor converting the number of frames of an input image signal by interpolating an image signal subjected to a motion compensation process between the frames of the input image signal; an OSD processing portionfor superposing an OSD signal on the input image signal, and a controlling portion. The FRC portionhas a motion vector detecting portionfor detecting a motion vector between the frames of the input image signal, an interpolation vector evaluating portionfor allocating interpolation vector between frames based on the motion vector information, and an interpolation frame generating portionfor generating an interpolation frame from the interpolation vector. When the OSD signal is superposed on the input image signal, the controlling portiondisables the motion compensation process of the FRC portionby making the motion vector detected by the motion vector detecting portion0 vector.

Image display device and method

There is provided an image display device, in which a pixel includes sub-pixels of four or more colors that include a color in addition to the three primary colors, and which can display a high-quality image in which false colors or artifacts are suppressed. The image display device includes a pixel area in which a plurality of pixels P are arranged in a matrix shape, and each of the pixels P includes m (m is an integer which is equal to or greater than 4) sub-pixels SP. When it is assumed that the colors of the m sub-pixels SP included in one pixel are C, C, . . . , and Cm, the m sub-pixels SP which are sequentially arrayed from an arbitrary position include all of the colors of C, C, . . . , and Cm in both the vertical direction and the horizontal direction in the pixel area.

Image display device

A signal conversion circuit () of a multiprimary display device () includes a low-range multiprimary signal generation section (), a high-range luminance signal generation section (), and a rendering process section (). The low-range multiprimary signal generation section includes a first filter section () which is capable of extracting a low-range component from an input image signal and a multiprimary conversion section (), whereas the high-range luminance signal generation section includes a luminance conversion section () and a second filter section () which extracts a high-range component of a luminance signal. The signal conversion circuit further includes a chromaticity conversion section () and a luminance/chromaticity change detection section (). As a frequency characteristics profile of the first filter section, one frequency characteristics profile is selected from among a plurality of predefined frequency characteristics profiles, in accordance with a result of detection by the luminance/chromaticity change detection section.

Multi-primary color display device

There is provided an image display device, in which a pixel includes sub-pixels of four or more colors that include a color in addition to the three primary colors, and which can display a high-quality image in which false colors or artifacts are suppressed. The image display device includes a pixel area in which a plurality of pixels P are arranged in a matrix shape, and each of the pixels P includes m (m is an integer which is equal to or greater than 4) sub-pixels SP. When it is assumed that the colors of the m sub-pixels SP included in one pixel are C1, C2, . . . , and Cm, the m sub-pixels SP which are sequentially arrayed from an arbitrary position include all of the colors of C1, C2, . . . , and Cm in both the vertical direction and the horizontal direction in the pixel area.

This multi-primary-color display device () includes a multi-primary-color display panel () and a signal converter (). The display device assigns a plurality of subpixels that form each pixel to a plurality of virtual pixels and is able to conduct a display operation using each of the plurality of virtual pixels as a minimum color display unit. The signal converter () includes: a low-frequency multi-primary-color signal generating section () which generates a low-frequency multi-primary-color signal; a high-frequency luminance signal generating section () which generates a high-frequency luminance signal; and a rendering processing section () which performs rendering processing on the plurality of virtual pixels based on the low-frequency multi-primary-color signal and the high-frequency luminance signal. The signal converter () further includes a magnitude of correction calculating section () which calculates, based on an input image signal, the magnitude of correction to be made on the high-frequency luminance signal during the rendering processing.

Multi-primary colour display device

A multiple primary color display device includes a plurality of pixels located in a matrix including a plurality of rows and columns. The pixels are each formed of at least four sub pixels for displaying different primary colors, which can be sorted into n number of virtual pixels, and use each of the n number of virtual pixels as a minimum color display unit for providing display. The sub pixels which form each of the virtual pixels include a sub pixel common to another of the virtual pixels. When a line having a width corresponding to the n number of virtual pixels is displayed, two sub pixels which are located at both of two ends, in a width direction, of the line and display a certain identical primary color to each other have a luminance lower than the original luminance that the two sub pixels.

An image processing device and method, and an image display device and method which realizes a high-definition displayed video by reducing motion blur caused by a holding-type display system and reducing motion blurs of the displayed video caused by the time integration effect of an image sensor while suppressing deterioration of an image. The image display device includes a motion vector detection section () which detects a motion vector in each predetermined region between the frames of an inputted image signal, and an edge emphasis part () which emphasizes the high-frequency component of the inputted image signal and an interpolated image signal generated by an FRC part () according to the motion amount of the inputted image signal detected by the motion vector detection section (). This compensates the high-frequency component attenuated by the time integration effect of the image sensor to reduce the apparent motion blurs to improve the sharpness of the displayed image. By making the degree of edge emphasis of the interpolated image signal smaller than that of the inputted image signal, the sharpness of the displayed image is improved without making the image deterioration of the interpolated image signal distinct.

It is an object to suppress a disturbance or distortion of an insertion image in the vicinity of an effective image edge portion such as an edge portion of a screen or the like caused by a moving compensation type frame rate conversion (FRC). An image processing device is provided with a moving vector detection circuit () for detecting a moving vector of an input image signal, an effective image edge portion judging circuit () for judging if a moving vector detecting position is adjacent to the effective image edge portion, and a vector switching circuit () for switching a vector in accordance with the judging result. The vector switching circuit () fixes the vector to 0 vector in the case where the moving vector detecting position is adjacent to the effective image edge portion. In the case where the position is in other region, the vector switching circuit () outputs the moving vector detected by the moving vector detection circuit () to an insertion vector allocation circuit ().

The quality of moving picture image with a large moving amount is prevented from deterioration due to moving compensation type frame rate conversion (FRC) processing. The image display device is comprised of an FRC unit () that interpolates an image signal subjected to moving compensation processing between frames so as to convert the number of frames of the input image signal, a moving amount judging unit () that judges whether a moving amount of the input image signal between the frames is larger than a predetermined value or not, and a control unit (). The FRC unit () is provided with a moving vector detecting unit () that detects a moving vector between the frames of the input image signal, an interpolation vector evaluating unit () that allocates an interpolation vector between the frames on the basis of the moving vector information and an interpolation frame generating unit () that generates an interpolation frame from the interpolation vector. In the case where the moving amount between the frames of the input image signal is larger than the predetermined value, the control unit () sets the moving vector detected by the moving vector detecting unit () to be zero-vector, and it invalidates the moving compensation processing of the FRC unit ().

In an image displaying device provided with a frame rate conversion (FRC) portion, the image quality deterioration in a moving image likely to include a plurality of the same consecutive images due to a FRC processing is prevented. The FRC portion () of the image displaying device includes a motion vector detecting portion () that detects motion vector information from an input image signal, an interpolation frame generating portion () that generates interpolation frames based on the motion vector information obtained by the motion vector detecting portion () and a same image detecting portion () that detects a case where the same images continue in the input image signal. In the case where the image of the (n&#x2212;1)-th frame in the input image signal is substantially the same as the image of the n-th frame, interpolation image generating processing with the motion compensation processing made ineffective is performed between n-th frame and (n+1)-th frame to prevent that the interpolation image including a lot of errors is output.

An image processing device, method, an image display device and method which can obtain a high-definition display image by properly controlling processing of reducing the blur of a displayed image caused by the time integration effect of an image sensor. The image display device comprises a motion detection part () which detects the moving amount of an input image signal, and an edge emphasis part () which subjects the input image signal to edge emphasis processing, and the image display device increases an edge emphasis degree of edge emphasis processing to an area where the moving amount of the input image signal is large. The crosstalk of a display apparatus can be efficiently eliminated to realize a precise, high-quality display. A liquid crystal display apparatus includes, as a crosstalk elimination circuit, an adjacent picture element acquisition circuit () that acquires display signals of picture elements adjacent to a self picture element, and two-dimensional LUTs () that use the display signals of the adjacent picture elements, acquired by the adjacent picture element acquisition circuit (), to correct display signals of the self picture element so as to correct RGB display signals.
