A control device for an internal combustion engine employing PCCI combustion, capable of realizing high-stability operation of the engine throughout a large operation area, is provided. The engine control device comprises a fuel supply system which supplies light oil or mixed fuel containing light oil to the engine, a gas supply system which supplies hydrogen to the engine, and a required premixed gas calculating unit which previously stores and uses multiple combustion waveforms (changing depending on hydrogen addition concentration) as data. The required premixed gas calculating unit selects one of the combustion waveforms so as to achieve high thermal efficiency depending on the status of the engine and determines the hydrogen addition concentration (addition concentration of the hydrogen to be supplied to the engine) corresponding to the selected combustion waveform, by which the generation of PM and NOx can be reduced while also improving the thermal efficiency of the engine.

The present invention aims at expanding an operation range for allowing a compression ignition combustion operation. The present invention provides an internal combustion engine of a compression ignition type that is capable of operating with a compression ignition combustion scheme in a given operation range. The ECU of the internal combustion engine detects an operating condition of the internal combustion engine and determines, according to the detected operating condition, which mode is to be used operate the internal combustion engine, a 4-cycle compression ignition mode or a 2-cycle compression ignition mode. The ECU controls the internal compression engine to perform the compression ignition mode determined. According to the present invention, the compression ignition combustion operation is switched from 4-cycle to 2-cycle when the operating condition of the internal combustion engine is in such state that the 4-cycle compression ignition mode cannot be performed, fro example, when the exhaust temperature is low.

A control system for an internal combustion engine includes a heat flux sensor arranged in the combustion chamber of the engine, for detecting the heat flux within the combustion chamber. An ECU controls at least one of the amount of fuel supplied to the engine, the fuel injection timing, and the ignition timing of the engine according to operating conditions of the engine. The heat flux sensor detects the heat flux at timing within a range from the latter half of the exhaust stroke of each of the cylinders of the combustion cycle of the engine to the first half of the compression stroke of the following combustion cycle. At least one of the amount of fuel, the fuel injection timing, and the ignition timing is corrected based on the detected heat flux in the same stroke as the compression stroke of the following combustion cycle in which the heat flux has been detected.

A valve operating system in an internal combustion engine comprises an operating-force generating means for generating an operating force corresponding to the revolution of the engine, an operating-force applying means for operating an engine valve, a hydraulic transmitting means capable of hydraulically transmitting the operating force between the operating-force generating means and the operating-force applying means, a mechanical transmitting means capable of rigidly transmitting the operating force between the operating-force generating means and the operating-force applying means, and a selective switchover means capable of alternatively switching-over the transmissions of the operating force from the operating-force generating means to the operating-force applying means by the hydraulic transmitting means and by the mechanical transmitting means. Thus, it is possible to select either the transmission of the operating force by the hydraulic transmitting means or the transmission of the operating force by the mechanical transmitting means to insure a reliable operation of the engine valve.

The lower oil supply system is comprised of a first oil pump connected to individual oil consumption parts disposed in a lower engine body portion for supplying a first oil, and the upper oil supply system is comprised of a second oil pump connected to individual oil consumption parts included in the valve operating device as well as to the hydraulic pressure chamber for supplying a second oil. This ensures that the second oil pump can be disposed in proximity to the hydraulic pressure chamber, so that an oil having a characteristic suitable for the operation of the valve operation characteristic changing means can be supplied quickly, and the cycle of replacement of the oil in the upper oil supply system can be prolonged.

A valve operating system for an internal combustion engine, including a cam having an arcuate base circle portion with the center thereof being aligned with the rotational axis of the cam and a raised portion projecting radially outwardly from the base circle portion, a cam-side piston operatively connected to the cam, a valve-side piston operatively connected to an engine valve, a hydraulic pressure chamber between the cam-side piston and the valve-side piston, an oil pressure supply source connected to the chamber through a check valve, a hydraulic pressure releasing valve connected to the chamber, and a solenoid valve or the like for controlling the operation of the releasing valve. This solenoid valve or the like is arranged to open the releasing valve to release the hydraulic pressure in the hydraulic pressure chamber in accordance with the operational position of the engine valve.
