A data processing apparatus includes a plurality of function keys and character input keys, a display for displaying inputted data; and card data group storage device for storing a plurality of card data including numerical data. The card data has a capacity capable of displaying one picture of the display device at one time and can be grouped with other card data through a link data. A card data group specified by the activated keys is read from the card data group storage devices. The numerical data contained in the card data of the selected card data group is processed by various calculations inputted by the function keys. This apparatus further includes a judging/readout circuit for reading out other card data groups associated with the previously readout card data group from the card data group storage device when a judgement concerning the link data attached to each of the card data groups is made. These same calculations can be carried out on the numerical data of other card data in other card data groups judged to have a connection with the initially read card data group after calculating the numerical data contained in the card data of the first card data group.

A character entry device comprises a keyboard having at least one specific key, a memory, and controls. When codes corresponding to particular characters are input through the keyboard, the memory is operable to store each of the particular characters in sequence in correspondence with the specific key. The controls are operable to be controlled such that, when the specific key is operated, the corresponding particular character is entered in accordance with the content of the memory. Thus, the device is capable of ensuring that a particular character which is not provided with a corresponding character key on the keyboard can be entered with a remarkably improved level of efficiency.

An editing system for use in a word processor includes a letter code producer for sequentially producing letter codes, a document memory having a plurality of memory elements aligned in vertical and horizontal directions with each memory element capable of storing one letter code, and an arrangement for setting vertical and horizontal boundaries within the document memory to divide the document memory into a plurality of columns or blocks, each column or block, having a plurality of lines, and different priorities being assigned to the columns or block. A column buffer is provided for storing line addresses from top to bottom in each of the columns or blocks and in the order of columns or blocks having a higher priority, and an address data producer is provided for sequentially producing address data of the memory elements in each line and in the order of lines as stored in the column buffer. A CPU is provided for controlling the depositing of the letter codes from the letter code producer to the document memory in compliance with the address data produced from the address data producer.
