An information processing apparatus transmits, by polling, a status verifying message to a disk array apparatus to verify a status of the disk array apparatus. The disk array apparatus attaches, upon receiving the status verifying message, a request for a command of a process to be executed to a response message to the status verifying message, and transmits the response message to the information processing apparatus. The information processing apparatus creates a command based on the request attached to the response message, and transmits the command created to the disk array apparatus.

A processing method for copying between storage device data regions and a memory system are provided to allow immediate access in a state of having completed copying in response to a copy instruction, even when actual data is being copied in a remote system, thus preventing a decrease in the performance of the access to the copy source during copying. Processes include copying data in a data region of a copy source to an intermediate media data region for each prescribed block unit in response to a copy instruction, as well as copying the data copied to the intermediate media data region to a copy destination data region. Processes also include interrupting copying and processing an access when there is an external access for a block of the copy source or the copy destination data region during the copy processing.

Method for accessing data being copied between data regions before the copying is completed

A copying method, disk storage system, and storage medium for copying data from one logical disk to another logical disk, making possible immediate access, in response to a copy command. Copying from a first logical disk to a second logical disk is performed for each area in a copy range, and when there is an access to either logical disk, copying is interrupted. When performing update access of an uncopied area in the first logical disk, the area is copied from the first logical disk to the second logical disk, and then the uncopied area is updated. When performing reference access of an uncopied area in the second logical disk, the corresponding area in the first logical disk is referenced. When performing update access of an uncopied area in the second logical disk, that area in the second logical disk is updated, and copying is prohibited. In this way, it is possible to access the first and second logical disks while copying is in progress, and it is possible to immediately notify a host, upon receipt of a copy instruction, that a copying has been completed.
