A control device acquires various requests concerning the performance of an internal combustion engine and sets a request-specific constraint on a control amount value. The constraint is expressed as a set of constraint index values assigned to individual control amount values, and the distribution of the constraint index values is varied in accordance with the type of a request. The control device integrates the constraint index values for each control amount value and then, in accordance with the distribution of the integrated constraint index value for a control amount, determines a limitation of the control amount. The control device determines a target control amount value within the limitation and controls the internal combustion engine in accordance with the target control amount.

Control device for internal combustion engine

A control apparatus of an internal combustion engine capable of appropriately reflecting various requests relating to the performance of the internal combustion engine. Specifically, the control device of the internal combustion engine acquires various requests relating to the performance of the internal combustion engine, and sets restricted ranges of the value of the control variable in accordance with the details of the requests. At this moment, the control device temporally changes the set restricted ranges for specific requests associated with the time integral value of the control variable rather than the instantaneous value of the control variable. Subsequently, the control device determines a final restricted range on the basis of the overlap between the restricted ranges set for each request, and determines the target value of the control variable in the final restricted range.

A catalyst degradation determining method includes the steps of: controlling an upstream-of-catalyst air-fuel ratio occurring upstream of a first catalyst to an air-fuel ratio that is rich of a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio so that first and second catalysts store oxygen up to a maximum storage amount of oxygen. The method then includes the steps of controlling the upstream-of-catalyst air-fuel ratio to a first lean air-fuel ratio until an output of a downstream-of-first-catalyst sensor indicates a lean air-fuel ratio, and then to a second lean air-fuel ratio and that has a value that is determined in accordance with an oxidizing-reducing capability index value, until a time point when an output of a downstream-of-second-catalyst air-fuel ratio sensor indicates an air-fuel ratio that is lean.

Catalyst degradation determining method

Immediately after startup of the engine, secondary air is supplied by an air pump into each exhaust branch passage via a secondary-air supply passage. A pressure sensor is disposed in the secondary-air supply passage. An output voltage of the pressure sensor decreases as the battery voltage decreases. When the battery voltage is lower than a permissible voltage, the output value of the pressure sensor is inhibited from being used as an output value representing the pressure. Thus, atmospheric pressure can be accurately detected.

Internal combustion engine and method of controlling the same

An ejector system controls the idle speed of an internal combustion engine by controlling an electric throttle valve system that adjusts the flow-rate of the intake air to be supplied to the internal combustion engine, and includes an ejector which generates a negative pressure of which the absolute value is larger than the absolute value of a negative pressure to be introduced from an intake manifold, a vacuum control valve which causes the ejector to operate or causes the ejector to stop operating, and an ECU that controls the vacuum switching valve. With the ejector system, even if the ejector is caused to operate or caused to stop operating, it is possible to appropriately suppress fluctuations in the idle speed, and appropriately obtain a negative pressure.

There is provided a device for supplying secondary air, which comprises a secondary air passage for supplying secondary air, to an exhaust passage of an engine, upstream of an exhaust purification device provided in the exhaust passage, a pump provided in the secondary air passage for supplying a secondary air, a battery used for driving the pump, at least one opening-closing device for opening and closing the secondary air passage, and a pressure sensor provided between the pump and the opening-closing device for detecting a pressure in the secondary air passage. A malfunction of at least one of the pump and the opening-closing device is detected on the basis of at least one of the pressures detected when the secondary air passage is opens and when the secondary air passage is closed. The malfunction detection is ceased when the voltage of the battery changes by a value larger than a predetermined value when the pressure sensor detects a malfunction of the pressure variation in the secondary air passage for detecting a malfunction of at least one of the pump and the opening-closing device.

Device for supplying secondary air

A method and apparatus controls an internal combustion engine of a vehicle in which an exhaust purifying catalyst capable of storing oxygen is provided in an exhaust system of the engine. The internal combustion engine is adapted to be temporarily stopped when a predetermined condition for stopping the engine is satisfied, and resumes its operation when the predetermined condition is eliminated. The internal combustion engine is operated so as to reduce an amount of oxygen stored in the exhaust purifying catalyst during a temporary stoppage of the engine, before fuel starts being burned for resuming the operation of the engine.

In a secondary air supply system, each of two branch portions of a secondary air supply pipe that is divided from a joint portion is provided with an air control valve, and the joint portion is provided with a pressure sensor and an auxiliary air control valve. The air control valves are opened at different timings such that pressure fluctuations in the joint portion upon opening of the firstly and the secondly opened air control valves are measured. An abnormality diagnosis is performed with respect to those two air control valves based on combinations of the aforementioned two pressure fluctuations.

An exhaust purification apparatus for an internal combustion engine includes a catalyst unit disposed in an exhaust passage of the engine, upstream and downstream air-fuel-ratio sensors disposed upstream and downstream, respectively, of the catalyst unit, a main-feedback controller, and a sub-feedback controller. The main-feedback controller calculates a main-feedback control quantity on the basis of an output value of the upstream air-fuel-ratio sensor and a predetermined upstream-side target value, and corrects, on the basis of the main-feedback control quantity, the quantity of fuel injected by an fuel injector. The sub-feedback controller calculates a sub-feedback control quantity on the basis of an output value of the downstream air-fuel-ratio sensor and a predetermined downstream-side target value, and corrects, on the basis of the sub-feedback control quantity, the quantity of fuel injected by the fuel injector, independently of the correction of the fuel injection quantity by the main-feedback control means.

Exhaust purification apparatus for internal combustion engine

A control device for an internal combustion engine, which makes the engine speed increased rapidly at the engine starting, converge to a target engine speed by a feed-back retard control of an ignition time, is disclosed. In the control device, if the ignition time when the engine speed converges at the target engine speed is in the advance side than a target ignition time, the ignition time is retarded to the target ignition time and an amount of intake air is increased.

An exhaust gas control apparatus and an exhaust gas purification method are for an internal combustion engine provided with a first catalyst portion disposed in an exhaust passage of the internal combustion engine, and a second catalyst portion disposed in the exhaust passage downstream of the first catalyst portion. A value that changes according to at least an amount of oxygen stored in the first catalyst portion is obtained as an obtained value. An air-fuel ratio of the internal combustion engine is controlled such that the obtained value matches a target value. A value that changes according to at least an amount of oxygen stored in the second catalyst portion is calculated as a calculated value, based on at least a state of exhaust gas flowing into the second catalyst portion. The target value is changed according to the calculated value. Accordingly, harmful components, such as unburned components and oxides of nitrogen, are able to be effectively purified even if the air-fuel ratio of the internal combustion engine changes abruptly.
