A gas separation and recovery method is provided. Based on the fact that a gas adsorbent has differing adsorption and desorption characteristics depending on the affinities and pressures of gas species, and gases of different species are desorbed at different timings, a target gas component is separated and recovered from a source gas by a pressure swing adsorption process in such a manner that a desorption step is divided into, for example, two time periods and desorbed gases are recovered separately in the respective time periods. In this manner, when gasand gashaving different desorption timings are adsorbed to an adsorbent, a gas rich in gas, and a gas rich in gasmay be recovered separately from each other. Thus, it becomes possible to separate and recover selectively a target gas component with high concentration.

A reforming method of a metallurgical furnace generated exhaust gas includes reforming a high temperature exhaust gas discharged from a metallurgical furnace by adding a reducing agent to the gas, wherein addition of the reducing agent is initiated when an oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas is 1 vol % or less, and a reforming reaction is completed when a temperature of the exhaust gas is 800&#xb0; C. or higher, and an apparatus thereof. A carbonaceous material having a total pore volume of from 0.5 to 1.5 cm/g per unit mass, a volume of micropores having diameters of from 10 to 20 &#x212b; of from 10 to 45% based on the total pore volume, a volume of mesopores having diameters of from 20 to 200 &#x212b; of from 35 to 65% based on the total pore volume, a volume of macropores having diameters exceeding 200 &#x212b; of not more than 15% based on the total pore volume, and a specific surface area of from 1,000 to 2,500 m/g. The carbonaceous material is incorporated into an electric double layer capacitor to provide increased capacitance.

Boron-substituted graphite, which contains N-bonded boron atoms in a small proportion relative to whole substituted boron atoms, is produced by heating a feed fine particulate mixture of an infusibilized carbonaceous material and a boron compound such that the carbonaceous material is carbonized into a carbon structure, raising a temperature of the resulting heated fine particulate mixture promptly to a graphitization treatment temperature in an inert atmosphere unreactive with boron, retaining the graphitization treatment temperature for a time sufficient to allow graphitization of the carbon structure to proceed to a desired extent, and then quickly cooling the resulting graphitized mixture. The boron-substituted graphite is useful as a negative electrode in a lithium-ion secondary battery.
