A controller stabilizes a distributed feedback plus reflection (DFB+R) laser, which has a back facet, a DFB section, a passive section, and a front facet with a low reflective element. An etalon filter is formed by a portion of the DFB section, the passive section, and the low reflective element. Control circuitry directly modulates the DFB section with a modulation signal and biases the passive section with a bias signal. In operation, a lasing mode of the DFB section is aligned to a long wavelength edge of one of the periodic peaks of a reflection profile of the etalon filter. Meanwhile, photodiodes are arranged to monitor the output power emitted from the laser's front and back facets. The control circuitry monitors a ratio of the detected output power and adjusts the bias based on the monitored ratio.

DFB+R laser structure for directly modulated laser

A spot-size converter includes first and second waveguide structures. The first waveguide structure extends longitudinally along a waveguide axis from a first end to a second end and is configured to support a first optical mode at the first end. The second waveguide structure is formed within the first waveguide structure. The second waveguide structure extends longitudinally between the first end and the second end. The second waveguide structure is configured to support a second optical mode at the second end. The second optical mode has a different diameter than the first optical mode. The second waveguide structure includes a waveguide core that has a first cross-sectional area in a first plane normal to the waveguide axis at the first end and a second cross-sectional area in a second plane normal to the waveguide axis at the second end. The second cross-sectional area is larger than the first cross-sectional area.

Spot-size converter

A laser includes a substrate, first and second claddings, a gain medium, and multiple supports. The first cladding is spaced apart from the substrate by an air gap. A thickness of the first cladding in a vertical direction is in a range from 0.05-0.15 micrometers. The gain medium is disposed on the first cladding opposite the air gap. The second cladding is disposed on the gain medium opposite the first cladding. A thickness of the second cladding in the vertical direction is in a range from 0.05-0.15 micrometers. The supports are coupled to each of the substrate, the first cladding, the gain medium, and the second cladding to retain the first cladding, the gain medium, and the second cladding spaced apart from the substrate.

Directly modulated laser

A grating coupled laser (GCL) includes an active section and a passive section. The passive section is butt coupled to the active section to form a butt joint with the active section. The active section includes an active waveguide. The passive section includes a passive waveguide, a transmit grating coupler, and a top cladding. The passive waveguide is optically coupled end to end with the active waveguide and includes a first portion and a second portion. The first portion of the passive waveguide is positioned between the second portion of the passive waveguide and the active waveguide. The transmit grating coupler is optically coupled to the passive waveguide and includes grating teeth that extend upward from the second portion of the passive waveguide. The top cladding is positioned directly above the first portion of the passive waveguide and is absent directly above at least some of the transmit grating coupler.

Grating coupled laser for Si photonics

A distributed feedback plus reflection (DFB+R) laser includes an active section, a passive section, a low reflection (LR) mirror, and an etalon. The active section includes a distributed feedback (DFB) grating and is configured to operate in a lasing mode. The passive section is coupled end to end with the active section. The LR mirror is formed on or in the passive section. The etalon includes a portion of the DFB grating, the passive section, and the LR mirror. The lasing mode of the active section is aligned to a long wavelength edge of a reflection peak of the etalon.

DFB with weak optical feedback

A two-kappa DBR laser includes an active section, a HR mirror, a first DBR section, and a second DBR section. The HR mirror is coupled to a rear of the active section. The first DBR section is coupled to a front of the active section, the first DBR section having a first DBR grating with a first kappa &#x3ba;1. The second DBR section is coupled to a front of the first DBR section such that the first DBR section is positioned between the active section and the second DBR section. The second DBR section has a second DBR grating with a second kappa &#x3ba;2 less than the first kappa &#x3ba;1. The two-kappa DBR laser is configured to operate in a lasing mode and has a DBR reflection profile that includes a DBR reflection peak. The lasing mode is aligned to a long wavelength edge of the DBR reflection peak.

Two-kappa DBR laser

A system includes a grating coupled laser and a photonic integrated circuit (PIC). The grating coupled laser includes a first waveguide and a transmit grating coupler optically coupled to the first waveguide. The PIC includes a second waveguide and a receive grating coupler optically coupled to the second waveguide. The receive grating coupler is in optical alignment with the transmit grating coupler. The receive grating coupler includes a first grating and a second grating spaced apart from and above the first grating within the PIC.

Dual layer grating coupler

A distributed reflector (DR) laser may include a distributed feedback (DFB) region and a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR). The DFB region may have a length in a range from 30 micrometers (&#x3bc;m) to 100 &#x3bc;m and may include a DFB grating with a first kappa in a range from 100 cmto 150 cm. The DBR region may be coupled end to end with the DFB region and may have a length in a range from 30-300 &#x3bc;m. The DBR region may include a DBR grating with a second kappa in a range from 150 cmto 200 cm. The DR laser may additionally include a lasing mode and a p-p resonance frequency. The lasing mode may be at a long wavelength side of a peak of a DBR reflection profile of the DBR region. The p-p resonance frequency may be less than or equal to 70 GHz.

Distributed reflector laser

A system includes a surface coupled edge emitting laser that includes a core waveguide, a fan out region optically coupled to the core waveguide in a same layer of the surface coupled edge emitting laser as the core waveguide; and a first surface grating formed in the fan out region; and a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) that includes an optical waveguide and a second surface grating formed in an upper layer of the PIC, wherein the second surface grating is in optical alignment with the first surface grating.

Surface coupled systems

In an embodiment, a laser includes a gain section. The gain section includes an active region, an upper separate confinement heterostructure (SCH), and a lower SCH. The upper SCH is above the active region and has a thickness of at least 60 nanometers (nm). The lower SCH is below the active region and has a thickness of at least 60 nm.

Directly modulated laser for PON application

In an embodiment, a delay line interferometer (DLI) multiplexer (MUX) includes a first stage and a second stage. The first stage includes a first DLI and a second DLI. The first DLI includes a first left input, a first right input, and a first output and has a free spectral range (FSR) that is about four times a nominal channel spacing. The second DLI includes a second left input, a second right input, and a second output and has an FSR that is about four times the nominal channel spacing. The second stage is coupled to the first stage and includes a third DLI. The third DLI includes a third left input optically coupled to the first output, a third right input optically coupled to the second output, and a third output. An FSR of the third DLI is about two times the nominal channel spacing.
