Provided are a method for measuring tool dimensions and a measurement device, whereby if a machine tool () cannot fit the overall outline of a tool () inside the field of vision (V) for an image from an imaging device (), the field of vision (V) of the imaging device () is moved by relatively moving the imaging device () and the tool (). In addition, the imaging device () can follow the outline () of the tool () by moving the field of vision (V), because the movement direction () for the field of vision (V) is determined on the basis of the partial outline () specified based on image data. In this way, even when measuring dimensions for a tool () with a larger diameter than the field of vision (V) of the imaging device (), a partial outline () of a desired range, for example, is specified. An outline of a desired range for the tool () is extracted if a plurality of specified partial outlines () are combined. Measurement of the dimensions of the tool () is possible by using such outlines.

Method of measurement and apparatus for measurement of tool dimensions

In the machine tool () pertaining to the present invention, an imaging device () takes an image of a tool () being moved in the feeding direction. Contour lines () are identified by means of the plurality of sets of image data generated from imaging. The movement trajectory () and the central axis () of the tool () are identified on the basis of the contour lines (). When the movement trajectory () and the central axis () are offset, said offset can be used to correct the positioning of the tool () with the machine tool (). As a result, the processing accuracy of a workpiece improves. Moreover, when the dimensions of a tool () that has a tilted posture are measured, it is possible to determine the actual tool diameter or the actual blade position in the tilted posture. The aforementioned blade position and tool diameter can be used to correct the positioning of the machine tool (). Thus, the processing accuracy of the workpiece improves even more.

Method of measurement and apparatus

In the machine tool () pertaining to the present invention, the contour lines () of a tool () are displayed on a display screen (S). When an operator measuring the dimensions traces a contour line () on the display screen (S) of a touch panel () with a finger, it is possible to automatically identify, on the display screen (S), the site to be measured (i.e., the contour line ()) on the tool (). In this way, an operator can measure the dimensions of the tool () in an extremely simple manner. Additionally, it is possible to automatically measure the tool diameter or the blade position of the tool () as the operator designates a specific position on the contour line () of the tool (). Thus, with such a method for measuring the dimensions of the tool (), it is possible to easily identify an unexpected site to be measured on a tool having complex contour lines, such as a multi-stage tool.
