A 2-(N-methyl-N-methanesulfonylamino)pyrimidine compound of the formula (3): [R is a hydrocarbyl group], is prepared by the steps of: (I) reacting an isobutyrylacetate ester with 4-fluorobenzaldehyde and urea in the presence of a protonic compound and a metal salt; (II) oxidizing the reaction product of the step (I); (III) reacting the oxidation product of the step (II) with an organic sulfonyl halide or an organic sulfonyl anhydride; and (IV) reacting the reaction product of the step (III) with N-methyl-N-methanesulfonamide. 

Preparation of aminopyrimidine compounds

The phosphorus-containing polycarbonate polyol disclosed herein has a structural unit (I) represented by a formula: &#x2014;OCOO&#x2014; and a structural unit (II) represented by a residue A, wherein A denotes a n-valent residue in which n of alcoholic hydroxyl groups are removed from a phosphorus compound having at least n of alcoholic hydroxyl groups, in which n is an integer of 2 or larger, and wherein a terminal group of the polyol is a alcoholic hydroxyl group. The novel phosphorus-containing polycarbonate polyol, as a reactive flame-retardant agent, can provide flame-retardant properties easily to polyurethane or the like.

Disclosed is a process for preparing 4-fluoro-3-trifluoromethylphenol from 4-fluoro-3-trifluoromethylaniline, which comprises the steps of (1) using about 1 to 20 parts by weight of water based on 1 part by weight of 4-fluoro-3-trifluoromethylaniline in the presence of sulfuric acid to obtain 4-fluoro-3-trifluoromethylaniline sulfate; (2) subjecting the obtained 4-fluoro-3-trifluoromethylaniline sulfate to a diazotization reaction by using a diazotizing agent to obtain an aqueous solution containing about 8 to 25% by weight of a 4-fluoro-3-trifluoromethylbenzene-diazonium salt where a sulfuric acid concentration after diazotization is about 30 to 70% by weight in terms of the amount of sulfuric acid added, and the amount of water used is about 1 to 20 parts by weight based on 1 part by weight of 4-fluoro-3-trifluoromethylaniline; and (3) hydrolyzing the obtained 4-fluoro-3-trifluoromethylbenzenediazonium salt where a sulfuric acid concentration is about 30 to 70% by weight in terms of the amount of sulfuric acid added in a copper sulfate aqueous solution.

Process for preparing 4-fluoro-3-trifluoromethylphenol

Methyl (3R, 6E)-3-�(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy!-7-�2', 6'-diisopropyl-4'-(4'-fluorophenyl)-5'-(methoxymethyl)pyridin-3'-yl!-5-oxy -6-heptenoate or other 3-oxy-5-oxo-6-heptenoic acid derivative is prepared by the reaction of an aromatic aldehyde and an oxyglutaric acid derivative in an aliphatic alcohol containing a small amount of water in the presence of an alkali metal carbonate or hydrogen carbonate.

Preparation of 3-oxy-5-oxo-6-heptenoic acid derivatives

A process for preparing an oxyglutaric acid ester derivative of the formula: ##STR1## in which each of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 is C.sub.1-5 alkoxy, C.sub.1-7 aralkyloxy, C.sub.7-9 halogenated aralkyloxy or phenyl, R.sup.4 is a hydroxyl-protecting group, and R.sup.5 is C.sub.1-10 alkyl which may have a substituent, comprises the steps of reacting a methyl phosphonate derivative or methyl phosphine oxide derivative with an oxyglutaric acid mono-ester to give a reaction product which comprises an oxyglutaric acid derivative having a phosphorus-containing group and a pentenedioic acid mono-ester (by-product), removing the pendenedioic acid mono-ester from the reaction product to isolate the oxyglutaric acid derivative, and converting the isolated oxyglutaric acid derivative into the oxyglutaric acid ester derivative. A process for obtaining an optically active oxyglutaric acid ester derivative is also disclosed.

Methyl (3R,6E)-3-�(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy!-7-�2',6'-diisopropyl-4'-(4'-fluor ophenyl)-5'-(methoxymethyl)pyridin-3'-yl!-5-oxy-6-heptenoate or other 3-oxy-5-oxo-6-heptenoic acid derivative is prepared by the reaction of an aromatic aldehyde and an oxyglutaric acid derivative in an aliphatic alcohol containing a small amount of water in the presence of an alkali metal carbonate or hydrogen carbonate.
