An image display apparatus capable of automatically controlling an output status for each of audio information signals inputted with image information signals from various different image sources. A first signal input circuit inputs an image information signal and an audio information signal from a personal computer. A second signal input circuit inputs an image information signal and an audio information signal of a television signal. An image selection circuit selects the first or second signal input circuit. An image conversion circuit converts the selected image information signal to a signal having the number of pixels corresponding to a display circuit. An audio signal selection circuit selects the first or second signal input circuit. An audio signal control circuit controls an output status for the input audio signal. An operation device inputs a setting of the image display apparatus, such as luminance, by user's operation. A control circuit controls the selection circuits and the audio signal control circuit, in accordance with the operation device. A memory circuit is used for storing the setting of the image display apparatus set by the user and the output status for the audio signal. The stored contents are read by the controller, and audio output is controlled by the audio signal control circuit.

The present invention makes a variety of improvements on the conventional television receiver to enhance the home communication capability thereof, thereby making the television receiver available as an information terminal apparatus for household use. The novel television receiver that receives a television signal to display a television image on screen comprising: a memory; a microphone through which voice information is entered externally; writing section for writing at least one piece of the voice information entered through the microphone and additional information associated with the at least one piece of voice information into the memory; and a display device for reproducing the at least one piece of voice information stored in the memory and outputting the reproduced voice information through a speaker and displaying the additional information associated with the at least one piece of voice information onto the screen. The memory stores as a message the voice information entered through the microphone. The stored message is reproduced according to an externally given instruction and the reproduction is outputted to a speaker to transmit the message to other persons with ease.

Television receiver having multiple communication capabilities

The present invention aims at providing an image display apparatus capable of displaying both a television signal and an image signal supplied from a personal computer with a high picture quality on a high definition display unit having 1024 by 768 pixels. In order to achieve this object, an image display apparatus according to the present invention includes an NTSC-VGA conversion circuit for converting a television signal to a signal having 640 by 480 pixels and corresponding to the non-interlacing VGA standard, a switch unit for selecting and outputting either the signal outputted from the NTSC-VGA conversion circuit and an inputted image signal from a personal computer, and a VGA-XGA conversion circuit for converting a number of pixels of a signal outputted from the switch unit to a number of pixels 1024 by 768 substantially equivalent to the number of the display unit.

Sound multiplex broadcast receiver and method of controlling display

A remote control apparatus has a plurality of manipulating buttons fitted in a plurality of windows, respectively, formed in a casing member, each of the manipulating buttons being formed of a transparent material and having a lower portion provided with a switch actuating projection and an upper portion disposed within each of the windows for allowing user to operate the button with his or her finger. A switch array includes a plurality of switches corresponding to the plural manipulating buttons and is mounted within the casing member such that each of the switches can be changed over between ON and OFF states by contact with a switch actuating projection in the operation of the corresponding manipulating button. A mode change-over switch is selectively movable to a plurality of positions for setting one of a plurality of predetermined modes in which the switch array is to be operated, and a display plate for displaying marks indicating functions of the individual manipulating buttons in the mode set by the mode change-over switch is movable with the mode change-over switch and is located between the button array and the switch array so that the marks can be visually recognized through the individual manipulating buttons, and so that the marks displayed correspond to the mode set by the mode change-over switch. The display plate includes slots through which the switch actuating projections extend.
