A receiver device for a satellite communication system capable of transmitting in either of two modes detects which transmission mode is currently in effect and adjusts its signal processing and output stages accordingly. The transmission may be recognized by reference to either the encoded information or the electromagnetic medium itself of the received electromagnetic transmissions. In one mode, only audio signals and related information are broadcast in FM form whereas in the other mode, a video image signal is also included, while a subcarrier signal is modulated by an audio and/or a data signal. The receiver system checks either the sub-carrier signal or video synchronization signals in the incoming transmissions to determine the transmission mode. The receiver may also be forced to a predetermined mode upon power-up to prevent spurious mode-selection errors.

Receiver device in a satellite communication system

Digital signals of up to four different modes are produced for transmission over an unused television channel in an existing cable television transmission line. No more bandwidth is required than that normally required by a single existing television channel. The various modes of digital signals all include synchronizing signals and service bit signals which are used to address any of the numerous terminals at the receiving side to control access to the various modes of digital signals transmitted over the single channel. By controlling the transmission of the modes to have constant time intervals, which can be selected based upon different sampling times, high quality audio signals may be transmitted or/and data channels or monaural audio signals, all of which may be transmitted over the single cable television transmission line.

A waveform shaping apparatus includes a shift register having a clock input terminal, data input terminals supplied with respective bits of a digital input signal and a plurality of data output terminals, and a plurality of coefficient multipliers connected to the respective data output terminals. A 2's-complement binary code offset within a predetermined range is used for representing the coefficient of each of the multipliers and such coefficient is controlled by manipulation of ON/OFF switches.

An information transmitting system including a transmitter and at least one receiver. The transmitter includes a modulator which is modulated by a first control signal intermittently, and whose center frequency is changed continuously in response to a second control signal. The receiver is provided with a frequency discriminator which demodulates the first and second control signals and the first control signal is applied as a first remotely controllable signal in digital fashion and the second control signal is applied as a second remotely controllable signal in analog fashion in the receiver.

A system for transmitting information and accomplishing control including a transmitter and at least one receiver in which the transmitter produces an ultrasonic wave or an electrical signal and includes a circuit for modulating the ultrasonic wave or electrical signal as a function of a time interval indicative of the control signal. The modulation is varied as an exponential function so as to assure more accurate reception and decoding of the intelligence by the receiver.
