A fuel supply device can have a low pressure fuel pump that supplies fuel to a vapor separator tank positioned adjacent to an engine from a main fuel tank disposed in a hull. An electrically operated primary fuel pump (e.g., a primer pump) and a check valve can both be positioned parallel to each other and between the main fuel tank and the low pressure fuel pump. A control device can be connected to the primary fuel pump for operating the primary fuel pump only for a preset fuel supply time when starting the engine is attempted and prior to the start of the engine.

An outboard motor includes an engine and a housing unit mounted on an associated watercraft. An intermediate unit is coupled with the housing unit to support the engine above the housing unit. An exhaust conduit discharging exhaust gases from the engine depends from the intermediate unit to extend generally vertically within the housing unit. The intermediate unit defines a coolant passage having a discharge port spaced apart from an outer surface of the exhaust conduit. A guide member is arranged to guide the coolant discharged from the discharge port toward the outer surface of the exhaust conduit.

Cooling arrangement for outboard motor

An exhaust system for an outboard motor includes an internal combustion engine. An intermediate member supports the engine. A housing unit depends from the intermediate member. An exhaust system guides exhaust gases from the engine. The exhaust system includes a main exhaust passage and an idle exhaust passage. The main exhaust passage discharges the exhaust gases that are produced above idle to the body of water through the housing unit. The idle exhaust passage discharges the exhaust gases that are produced during idle to the atmosphere. The intermediate member defines a portion of the main exhaust passage and a portion of the idle exhaust passage. The intermediate member forms a recessed area in the main exhaust passage portion. The idle exhaust passage communicates with the main exhaust passage portion at the recessed area.

Exhaust system for outboard motor

A shaft coupling for an outboard motor includes an improved construction that can be held under a good lubricative condition. The outboard motor includes an engine. An engine body defines a first aperture through which a crankshaft extends and is journaled. A recessed portion of the crankshaft defines inner spline grooves. A support member that supports the engine body has a second aperture. A driveshaft extends through the second aperture toward the recessed portion. The driveshaft has a tip portion defining outer spline grooves that are coupled with the inner spline grooves. A first seal member is disposed between an outer surface of the output shaft and an inner surface of the first aperture. A second seal member is disposed between an outer surface of the driveshaft and an inner surface the second aperture. The engine body, the support member, the output shaft, the driveshaft and the first and second seal members together define a lubricant chamber to enclose lubricant.

Shaft coupling for outboard motor

An outboard motor includes a housing unit and an engine. The engine defines a first exhaust passage and a first lubricant passage. The first exhaust passage generally extends on a first side of the outboard motor. The first lubricant passage generally extends on a second side of the outboard motor opposite to the first side. An exhaust guide member is coupled with the housing unit to support the engine above the housing unit. An exhaust conduit depends from the exhaust guide member within the housing unit. The exhaust guide member defines a second exhaust passage connecting the exhaust conduit with the first exhaust passage. The second exhaust passage generally extends on the first side. A lubricant reservoir depends from the exhaust guide member within the housing unit. The exhaust guide member defines a second lubricant passage connecting the lubricant reservoir with the first lubricant passage. The second lubricant passage generally extends on the second side. The engine and the exhaust guide member together define a first water passage extending in the vicinity of the first and second exhaust passages. The engine defines a second coolant passage extending from the first coolant passage toward a location in the vicinity of the first lubricant passage.

A cooling system for an outboard motor includes an improved construction that can inhibit a housing unit of the outboard motor from absorbing heat that causes discoloring of the unit. The outboard motor includes a power head that has an engine. The housing unit depends from the power head. An exhaust conduit is arranged to discharge exhaust gases from the engine. At least a portion of the exhaust conduit extends through the housing unit. A cooling system is arranged to cool at least the portion of the exhaust conduit by coolant. The cooling system includes an inner coolant pool surrounding the portion of the exhaust conduit and an outer coolant pool surrounding the inner coolant pool. The cooling system supplies the coolant to the inner and outer pools. The coolant supplied to the outer pool is cooler than the coolant supplied to the inner pool.

A starting fuel supplying apparatus improves restarting performance of an engine in a warm-up state. In the engine in which a carburetor is disposed on the side of the cylinder, the starting fuel supplying apparatus and a thermo-sensitive member attached to the carburetor are disposed on the side of the carburetor close to the engine.

An outboard motor has an exhaust pipe assembly extending through a driveshaft housing. The exhaust pipe is separated into an upstream exhaust pipe and a downstream exhaust pipe which are formed separately from each other. The upstream exhaust pipe depends into the driveshaft housing and has a lower end connected to a pipe support member. An upper end of the downstream exhaust pipe connects to the pipe support member in a manner to communicate with the upstream exhaust pipe. The downstream pipe depends through an opening in a bottom wall of the driveshaft housing, and a mount at the lower end of the pipe is connected to the driveshaft housing in order to secure the pipe in place. The upper end of the downstream exhaust pipe is fit into the pipe support member without the use of fasteners. In this configuration, the downstream exhaust pipe can be removed independently of the upstream exhaust pipe, and can be drawn downwardly through the opening during removal. This enables the downstream exhaust pipe to be easily and quickly replaced.

A valve cam mechanism for a four-cycle engine includes an improved construction. The engine includes at least one camshaft having cam lobes to actuate intake and exhaust valves. A decompression actuator is affixed to the camshaft for pivotal movement. A holder section of the actuator is arranged to hold the intake or exhaust valve in an open position when the actuator exists in an initial position. A weight section is disposed opposite to the holder section relative to the pivot axis to place the holder section in the initial position. The actuator pivots when the weight section moves by centrifugal force to release the holder section from the initial position. The camshaft further has a projection extending radially and defining a first surface on which the stopper section abuts to inhibit the actuator from pivoting beyond a preset range. The cam lobe includes a base circle portion and a nose portion protruding from the base circle of the cam lobe. The nose portion is cured to be harder than the base circle portion. The base circle portion defines a second surface projecting toward the actuator. The holder section abuts on the second surface when the actuator lies in the initial position. The side surface is finished by a machining process.

Valve cam mechanism for four-cycle engine

An insulator supports a plurality of charge formers on the end of an intake manifold. The insulator, made in part of elastic material, thermally decouples the charge formers from the engine to reduce conduction of engine heat to the charge formers. Expansion of the intake manifold due to heat deforms the insulator, without substantially moving the charge formers so as not to deform a linkage which interconnects the charge formers.

A throttle linkage system for synchronizing the movement between a plurality of throttle valves journaled in throttle bodies affixed to a common member that includes a link that has the same coefficient of thermal expansion as the member to which the throttle bodies are connected so as to avoid synchronization problems due to different thermal expansions. In addition, the linkage system is such that it accommodates manufacturing variations from the more remotely positioned throttle valves by providing a structure for permitting relative movement.

Throttle linkage system

A mounting arrangement for an accelerator pump and a choke actuation mechanism, which are used in conjunction with a plurality of charge formers, minimizes the girth of the engine while making these components more accessible and easing assembly. An actuator and a choke solenoid of the choke actuation system are mounted proximate to one another and partially between adjacent induction pipes of an induction system. This position allows these components to be located on an exterior side of the induction system without interfering with the protective cowling of the motor. The accelerator pump is mounted at the end of a series of charge formers, proximate to a throttle linkage which controls throttling devices of the charge formers. This position of the accelerator pump eases the installation of this component without increasing the girth of the engine.

Mounting arrangement for engine components of an outboard motor

A linkage system interconnects a plurality of throttle shafts, while minimizing the effects of thermal expansion in the linkage on the throttle shafts. The linkage includes a plurality of linkage rods which interconnect a plurality of throttle levers attached to the throttle shafts. At least a first and a second linkage rod are connected to a first lever in a manner in which thermal expansion of the first linkage rod applies a force to the first lever which is equal but opposite to a force applied to the first lever due to thermal expansion of the second linkage rod.

Charge former linkage system for outboard motor

Several embodiments of lubricating and breather systems for outboard motors that provide effective oil separation and which permits the blow-by gases to flow in a direction the same as the lubricant return to the lubricant tank so as to avoid flow restriction. The blow-by gases are then discharged to the atmosphere through a conduit that is separate from any of the lubricant return conduits. Oil separating arrangements are disclosed as are various positions for the oil separator including in the cam chamber of the engine or in the lubricant tank.
