A machine tool includes a workpiece spindle being rotatable about a rotation axis of the workpiece and configured to hold a workpiece such that the workpiece. A tool holding device is rotatable about a tool rotation axis and configured to hold a turning tool via which turning is performed on the workpiece. A movement mechanism is configured to move the tool holding device such that the turning tool rotates relatively to the workpiece toward an arbitrary direction perpendicular to the rotation axis of the workpiece. Control circuitry is configured to execute a machining program, to perform the turning, which includes an additional code which designates a target cutting direction of the arbitrary cutting direction, and to control the movement mechanism to move the turning tool in the target cutting direction with respect to the workpiece while the control circuitry executes the additional code.

A turning controller includes a storage, a working program processing device, a command value setting processing device, an approach angle setting command amount calculator, and a command processing device. The storage is configured to store a working program and tool shape data. The working program processing device is configured to analyze the working program and to calculate and output command amounts. The command value setting processing device is configured to set an approach angle command value for defining an approach angle. The approach angle setting command amount calculator is configured to calculate, as an approach angle setting command amount, a B-axis command amount for controlling to cause the approach angle to have the approach angle command value based on the tool shape data. The command processing device is configured to output the approach angle setting command amount to the B-axis driver.

Turning controller

The NC device of the machining center has the data memory for storing exchange history and data concerning a tool therein when the tool has been manually exchanged. When the data concerning the tool is updated, the data memory also stores update history. The main control unit determines whether the tool is changed on the basis of at least either of the exchange history and the update history. On the basis of a determination result, the main control unit controls the spindle head moving unit to stop the tool as well as allows a caution about the tool to be displayed on the display unit.
