A data input system including electronic paper and a stylus writing device is disclosed. The electronic paper includes a transparent display substrate on which a number of optically readable code patterns have been formed, the optically readable code patterns representing positional information on a display surface, a rear surface substrate opposing the display substrate, and coloring particles that are enclosed between the display substrate and the rear surface substrate and that are movable by applying an electric or a magnetic field. The electronic paper displays an image due to motion of the particle. The stylus writing device includes a writing head provided at the end of the stylus for writing the image by applying an electric or a magnetic field to the electronic paper by contact and includes an optical reading device for optically reading the code patterns formed on the display surface where the end of the stylus contacts.

Data input system

A transmitting/receiving system includes two transmitting/receiving apparatuses connected through a transmission cable having two one-direction signal lines. Each apparatus includes a transmitting unit that transmits a signal, a receiving unit that receives a signal, a calculator, a controller, a storage, and an estimating unit. The calculator calculates an Signal to Noise (S/N) ratio of the received signal. The controller controls the calculation by obtaining, as a first value, a strength of a signal caused by a check signal transmitted during absence of a check signal being received, obtaining, as a second value, a strength of a check signal received during absence of a check signal being transmitted, and dividing the second value by the first value. The storage stores relationship between a predetermined transmission-cable S/N ratio and temporal signal fluctuation. The estimating unit estimates temporal signal fluctuation from the calculated S/N ratio and the relationship.

A transmitting/receiving device includes a transmitting/receiving unit and a signal processing unit. The transmitting/receiving unit is connected to a transmission side or a reception side via a differential signal line including a pair of signal lines, receives a signal using one of the pair of signal lines when being connected to the transmission side, and transmits a signal using the other of the pair of signal lines when being connected to the reception side. The signal processing unit processes a signal that is transmitted or received by the transmitting/receiving unit.

The transmitter component transmits a predetermined detection signal, using one or other of a plurality of signal lines of a transmission path. The receiver component receives an interference signal, occurring in a different signal line from the signal line the transmitter component used for transmitting the detection signal, the interference signal occurring from interference due to the detection signal transmitted from the transmitter component. The comparison component compares a voltage value of the interference signal received by the receiver component with a predetermined reference voltage value. A responder authenticity determination system, comprising: a responder that sends a response signal in response to a received signal; an interrogation signal generator that generates an interrogation signal having a random waveform; a transceiver that sends the generated interrogation signal to the responder, and receives a response signal from the responder; and an authenticity determination unit that determines authenticity of the responder based on the received response signal and the random waveform of the generated interrogation signal.

A non-contact signal transmission apparatus transmits electric power and a signal in a non-contact manner via magnetic induction.
