Methods, systems, and apparatuses for wireless communication are described. A wireless station (STA) may receive a frame from an access point (AP) reserving a channel for a time period. The frame may include an information field associated with a tune away procedure performed by the AP during the time period. The STA may perform, based on the information field, direct communications with a neighboring device on the channel during the time period.

As SIP usage becomes prolific in 3G wireless communications, challenges are presented to using the current SIP protocols for real-time communications due to the limited signaling compression offered via SIP become. Signaling introduces unwanted delays on limited bandwidth and increases the call setup time. Additionally, SIP messages are large&#x2014;from a few hundred bytes to several kilobytes&#x2014;and compression is not offered on all available fields. The invention provides for compression of the VIA field of SIP messages through several techniques and thereby achieves lower signaling delays that reduce complex call setup delays and reduce the loss of bandwidth to necessary in-call signaling.

A wireless communication device, a wireless communication system, and a method for optimizing battery power resources are described. The wireless communication device comprises a rechargeable battery, a control module, and a display. The control module is operatively coupled to the rechargeable battery and is configured to determine a first remaining battery time associated with a first operational mode, and a second remaining battery time associated with a second operational mode. The display operatively is coupled to the control module and is adapted to display both remaining battery times. The wireless communication system comprises antennas configured to communicate using both operational modes. The method comprises accessing a network system, estimating battery metrics based on current battery power, querying a table that associates battery power metrics with different radio access technologies, and generating a table output that displays the remaining battery time associated with each of the wireless technologies.

Software architecture for dual mode phone and method of use

Systems and methods for the operation of a dual mode wireless communication device are provided. A wireless communication device includes a scan module, a registration module and a learning module that cooperate to allow the device to identify available radio access technologies, select a radio interface, manage the radio interface, and learn behavioral patterns that optimize operation of the dual mode device. The dual mode device maximizes the overall time it is operational on the better radio access technology while not performing unnecessary scans. This helps in improving performance, preserving battery life and enhancing the overall user experience. In operation, the dual mode device scans for available voice or data networks upon identification of a trigger event, for example, a manual instruction, a drop in signal strength, a loss of signal, a time of usage on a particular network, a battery condition, an application preference, a state of the wireless communication device, or a geographic location. Various trigger events may be stored in a data storage area on the device and new trigger events such as geographic locations where manual scans are frequently requested by the user or geographic locations where signal strength is low or the network signal is typically lost can be stored for future reference by the device in order to improve performance.

System and method for optimized use of a dual mode wireless communication device

A multi-mode wireless terminal device includes a first network interface for communicating with a first wireless network and a second network interface for communicating with a second wireless network. The second wireless network offers services that are not necessarily provided by the first wireless network. The multi-mode wireless terminal device acts as a gateway so that wireless terminal devices operating on the first wireless network may connect to the multi-mode wireless terminal device in order to access the services of the second wireless network. The multi-mode terminal device can limit access to the services based on operational parameters such as battery power level, wireless signal strength, usage time, processing load and the like.
