A method or apparatus for wireless transferring energy between a source coil and a drain coil, comprises selling an initial resonant frequency of the source coil as a first condition; setting the source coil and said drain coil in positions relative to each other to define an initial coupling coefficient therebetween, so that the initial coupling coefficient comprises a second condition; and adiabatically changing one or both of the conditions while pumping energy into the source coil. The source coil energy is transferred to the drain coil over the course of the adiabatic change.

Efficient and robust wireless energy transfer

An efficient broadband crystal for wavelength conversion, the crystal being a quasi-phase matched non-linear crystal, having an aperiodic poled structure, each period being tuned, and wherein said tuning varies adiabatically along a length of said crystal from a first end wherein said tuning is a strong negative mismatch to a second end wherein said tuning is a strong positive mismatch or vice versa. The crystal is able to provide efficient wavelength conversion over a range of frequencies.

Crystal for optical conversion

A method and system () are presented for producing exciting radiation (P') to be used in producing an output coherent anti-stokes Raman scattering (CARS) signal of a medium (). An input spectral phase coherent optical pulse (P), carrying a pump, a Stokes and a probe photon, is optically processed by adjusting spectral phase and polarization of wavelength components of the input pulse to produce a unitary optical exciting pulse (P&#x2032;) that carries the pump photon, the Stokes photon and multiple probe photons and is capable of inducing interference between contributions from at least some of vibrational levels in the CARS signal.

Coherently controlled nonlinear raman spectroscopy

An optical system and method are presented for use in a multi-photon microscope. The system comprises an imaging lens arrangement, and a pulse manipulator arrangement. The pulse manipulator arrangement comprises a temporal pulse manipulator unit which is accommodated in an optical path of an input pulse of an initial profile, and is configured to affect trajectories of light components of the input pulse impinging thereon so as to direct the light components towards an optical axis of the lens arrangement along different optical paths, said temporal light manipulator unit being accommodated in a front focal plane of the imaging lens arrangement, thereby enabling to restore the input pulse profile at an imaging plane.

Method of and system for selective cell destruction

A wavelength selective switch, in which an input optical signal is wavelength-dispersed and polarization-split in two angularly oriented planes. A polarization rotation device, such as a liquid crystal polarization modulator, pixelated along the wave-length dispersive direction such that each pixel operates on a separate wavelength channel, rotates the polarization of the light signal passing through the pixel, according to the control voltage applied to that pixel. The polarization modulated signals are then wave-length-recombined and polarization-recombined by means of similar dispersion and polarization combining components as were used to respectively disperse and split the input signals. The direction of the output signal is determined by whether the polarization of a particular wavelength channel was rotated by the polarization modulator pixel, or not. In this way, a fast, wavelength dependent, optical switch is provided, capable of use in WDM switching applications.

Wavelength selective optical switch

A method and system are presented for producing an output coherent anti-stokes Raman scattering (CARS) signal of a medium. The method comprises generation of a unitary optical excitation pulse that carries a pump photon, a Stokes photon and a probe photon; and inducing a CARS process in the medium by exciting the medium by the at least one such unitary optical excitation pulse.

Coherently controlled nonlinear Raman spectroscopy and microscopy

A method and device are provided for automatically generating a key and a conjugate key to be used in an optical code division multiple access system. The method comprises applying a down conversion process to pump input light to thereby produce down converted broadband signal and idler fields that are complex conjugates of each other. The signal and idler fields thus serve as the key and its conjugate. Also provided according to the invention is a method for use in coding/decoding a signal in an optical code division multiple access system.

Method and system for use in optical code division multiple access

A tunable optical filter is provided that includes an array of independently tunable filter elements. Each of the elements is located along a different optical path that extends between an input and an output port. Optical assemblies for receiving an incident optical signal for providing a filtered optical signal are also provided. In one embodiment, polarization independent spectral filtering can be achieved. Wavelength selectable add/drop multiplexers and demultiplexers, dynamic gain equalizers and attenuators, optical channel blockers and branch filters, switches, and modulators are also provided. Furthermore, methods for constructing and operating filters consistent with this invention are also provided.

Tunable optical filter

An adaptive pulse compressor is described, especially for use with ultrashort pulses, wherein the input pulses are modified in an iterative fashion, according to a feedback signal obtained from measurement of the output pulses. The feedback signal is programmed, by means of a programmable spatial light modulator, to allow for independent control of the individual spectral components of the incoming pulses, such that almost arbitrary phase functions can be realized to accomplish efficient compression. One of the main disadvantages associated with prior art pulse compressors, namely, the need for characterization of the uncompressed pulses, is thus eliminated. The compressor is thus capable of handling completely uncharacterized or partially characterized input pulses, or pulses from time varying sources.

A method for determining the fine structure of materials by means of a nonlinear scanning laser microscope, including the steps of forming an image of a specimen by scanning selected points thereof with a focusable laser beam of a predetermined fundamental frequency w, thereby exciting the points to generate signals constituting the third harmonic 3w of said fundamental frequency w, collecting the signals by collecting means, substantially filtering out from the collected 3w signals, signals of a frequency other than the third harmonic 3w, feeding the filtered 3w signals to a detector, and storing the output of the detector for processing and display. A nonlinear scanning laser microscope adapted to form an image of a specimen by scanning it point by point with a focusable laser beam of a predetermined fundamental frequency, is also provided.
