A disk drive includes a disk defining an opening, and a motor hub coupled to the disk. The motor hub further defines a swage ring extending at least partially into the opening of the disk, the swage ring swaged radially outwards into contact with the disk.

A method of manufacturing a disk drive, the method including providing a disk and a motor hub, the disk defining an opening, the opening having a pre-swaged inner diameter, and the motor hub defining a swage ring having a pre-swaged outer diameter. This application discloses a hard disk drive comprising a landing ramp mounted to a disk base including a slider limiter for at least one slider in the hard disk drive to limit movement of the sliders during a non-operational shock event while parked on the loading ramp. Each of the slider limiters includes a clearance zone configured so that when the slider contacts the slider limiter during the non-operational event, the read-write head remains out of contact with the slider limiter. The clearance zone may include a recess and/or a cutout. The clearance zone may include a recess and/or a cutout. The recess may take any shape, for example the recess may be a polygon and/or curved in cross section. The polygon may have at least two sides. The clearance zone may further include a radial bulge to further protect the read-write head during non-operational shock events.

A disk drive includes a base, and a spindle motor coupled to the base. The spindle motor includes a hub defining an axis of rotation. The disk drive further includes a disk disposed about the hub and including a disk inner diameter biased against the hub at a contact location of the hub. The disk drive further includes a balancing element including a cylindrical portion disposed about the hub. The balancing element further includes a first cavity defining a first cavity centroid disposed on a same side of the axis of rotation as the contact location, and a second cavity defining a second cavity centroid disposed on a side of the axis of rotation opposite the first cavity centroid. The second cavity centroid is spaced apart from the first cavity centroid in a direction along the axis of rotation.

A disk drive includes a spindle motor, a pivot bearing cartridge, and a laminated cover. The laminated cover includes a first cover layer attached to the spindle motor, and a second cover layer attached to the pivot bearing cartridge. The cover further includes a damping layer disposed between the first and second cover layers for mechanically insulating the spindle motor and the pivot bearing cartridge from each other to mitigate vibration through the cover.

An aspect of the invention can be regarded as a disk drive that includes a disk drive base, a disk including disk surface, and a spindle motor including a spindle motor hub including a clamping surface with disk clamp holes. The disk drive includes a disk clamp disposed upon the disk surface. The disk clamp includes a screw head interface surface and screw openings. The disk drive includes disk clamp screws each including a shaft sized and configured to respectively engage the threaded disk clamp holes respectively through the screw openings. The screws each further include a screw head having a screw head clamping surface disposed against the screw head interface surface. The screws each further include a surface coating disposed upon the screw head clamping surface. The surface coating has a static coefficient of friction less than a static coefficient of friction of the screw head.

A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk, a spindle motor for rotating the disk, and a head actuated radially over the disk. A disk clamp clamps the disk to a hub of the spindle motor, wherein the disk clamp comprises a notch at a predetermined location along an outer diameter of the disk clamp. The disk is aligned non-concentric with the hub such that a center of the disk is aligned offset from a center of the hub toward the notch. The notch substantially counteracts an imbalance due to the non-concentric alignment of the disk with respect to the hub.
