A vehicle safety system comprising: at least one occupant safety device () for protecting an occupant of the vehicle () in the event of a side impact; and a control unit () operable to receive information from one or more vehicle sensors () and to provide a trigger signal to activate the occupant safety device (). Under normal driving conditions, a default deployment algorithm is used by the control unit () to determine whether the trigger signal should be generated; and if it is determined that loss of control of the vehicle () is occurring, or is expected to occur, and the longitudinal speed of the vehicle () exceeds a first threshold, the control unit () employs a first further deployment algorithm to determine whether the trigger signal should be generated. The first further deployment algorithm being adapted to cause the trigger signal to be generated a shorter time after the initiation of a side impact than is the case for the default deployment algorithm.

Vehicle safety system

A vehicle safety system for detecting a side impact, the system comprising at least one sensor operable to detect one or more parameters relating to the rate of yaw of the vehicle, and to provide an output that is dependent upon the longitudinal position along the vehicle of the side impact.

A crash detection arrangement, to be installed in a motor vehicle, for detecting a crash and providing a control signal for controlling a safety device in the event that a crash is detected, the arrangement comprising an accelerometer and a control unit, the accelerometer being arranged to supply a signal to the control unit which is indicative of the acceleration of the vehicle, the control unit being adapted to: calculate a classification parameter based on the value of the signal from the accelerometer during a classification time period, which includes an interval of time before an initiation criterion was fulfilled; modify a crash evaluation algorithm in dependence upon the classification parameter; and perform the crash evaluation algorithm upon fulfillment of the initiation criterion to produce the control signal.

Arrangement for detecting a crash

A triggering unit is disclosed for use in triggering a safety device in a motor vehicle to protect an occupant of the vehicle in an impact situation in which the vehicle impacts with an impacting object. The triggering unit is configured to actuate the safety device only for total stiffness between the vehicle and the impacting object exceeds a predetermined stiffness value. The unit incorporates a calculating arrangement to calculate stiffness from two or more sensed parameters.
