The invention concerns a device for pressing a side wall ( ) of an installation for continuous casting of metal strips between two cooling drums with horizontal axes against the planar surfaces of the cylinders, comprising three thrust member connected to a mounting frame ( ) maintained in a fixed position, exerting their action on the rear face of a plate ( ) on the front face whereof is fixed the side wall ( ) or on the rear face of the side wall ( ), said action being oriented along a substantially horizontal direction (Oy) parallel to the axes of the drums and being exerted via means connecting each of said thrust members on said plate. Said connection means of a first thrust member enable a relative displacement in translation of said thrust A-4 member and of the plate ( ) or of the side wall ( ) being along a horizontal direction (Ox) a&equals;parallel to the plane of the planar surfaces of the drums and along a vertical direction (Oz) parallel to the plane of the planar surfaces of the drums. Said connection means of a second thrust member enable a relative displacement in translation of said thrust member and of the plate ( ) or of the side wall ( ) along-a horizontal direction (Ox) parallel to the plane of the planar surfaces of the drums. Said connection means of a third thrust member do not enable any relative displacement in translation of said thrust member and the plate ( ) or of the side wall ( ).

Device for pressing a side wall in installation for continuous casting of metal strips between two drums against the planar surfaces of the drums

A side wall closing the casting space of an installation for continuous casting of thin metal strips between unwinding cooled walls, including a support plate, on the rear face of which thrust members exert their action, and an active face arranged against the front face of the support plate. Lateral portions are designed to be worn by contact with the edges of the cooled walls over a maximum depth &ldquo;e&rdquo; and a length &ldquo;1&rdquo;. The support plate and the active part are urged in contact with each other in a way enabling them to be disengaged non-destructively. The support plate front face has in its central part a recess whereof the depth is greater than &ldquo;e&rdquo; and the outer edges of the front face have a general shape which matches that of the outer edges of the active part and have a length less than &ldquo;1&rdquo;.

Side wall for installation for continuous casting of metal strips

A stainless steel band is continuously cast. The stainless steel band is descaled and cold rolled. The cold rolled band is annealed and descaled or bright annealed. The band is finish formed and finally coiled. The stainless steel band is not coiled after being continuously cast and before being finally coiled.

The process is characterized in that, before starting casting, an initialization position is determined for the stopper rod control actuator when the stopper rod is resting on its seat under its own weight and after having filled the tundish equipped with this stopper rod, the actuator is operated to place it in a controlled superclosed position and, to start casting, the actuator is driven according to an imposed movement versus time law, time (t1) for start of casting being determined from this law and the control actuator continues to be driven in opening direction to enable the metal to flow into the ingot mould.

Method for starting continuous metal casting operation

Both a process and plant are provided for electrolytically coating with a metal layer the casting surface of a roll for twin-roll or single-roll continuous casting of thin metal strip. The casting surface is at least partially immersed in an electrolyte solution containing a salt of the metal to be deposited, so as to face at least one anode. The surface is placed at a cathode and a relative movement is created between the casting surface and the electrolyte solution. Insulating masks are interposed between the anode or anodes and the arrises of the casting surface, the insulating masks preventing a concentration of the lines of current on the arrises and in their vicinity.

Control process for twin-roll continuous casting, in which, during casting, the roll separation force (RSF) is measured and the position of the bearings of at least one of the rolls is varied in order to increase or decrease the center-to-center spacing of the rolls, with a view to keeping the force substantially constant, a band (.DELTA.RSF) of force values bracketing a desired nominal force (RSF.sub.0) is predetermined and the position of the bearings is varied more sharply when the value of the measured force lies outside the band than when it lies within the band. Application especially to the twin-roll continuous casting of thin steel strip.

The invention relates to a device for supporting a side wall (2) of an installation for the twin-roll continuous casting of thin metal products of the type including two cooled rolls (1) with horizontal axes, two side walls (2) applied against the sides (3) of the rolls (1), said support device including a carriage (5) which can be displaced on command in a direction parallel to the axes of the rolls (1), a thrust device (6) carried by said carriage (5) and a panel (4), integral with the side wall (2), connected to said thrust device (6) by means of a thrust plate (8) and thrust members (9, 9', 9', 9'') bearing on said thrust plate (8) and said panel (4), wherein said panel (4) includes at least one tie (11, 11') passing through the thrust plate (8) and the free end of which is equipped with a stop (13, 13') which can be applied against the rear face (14) of said thrust plate (8).
